Do you leave a single squad at your home base to defend it against a surprise jump assault?

Thanks for the tip. While I like the sound of the game, I'm not paying full price for 11 missions since I know there's no prospect of me multiplayering often. Too much goes on at home for me not to be reaching for a pause button every few minutes.

There's a level editor/builder coming soon for free Grumbold, if that's any influence on your choice...

I'm playing a lot of Eldar, so you can generally teleport stuff back dead fast if your base IS attacked. Orks have turrets on all their buildings anyway, and I'm not really into the Marines or Chaos, but I guess they both have rapid response units too. The jump units aren't really that great for base assaults, being mostly close combat units without heavy weaponery, so they're not likely to smash the place up too badly before you can get something back to shoot them up.

Unless it's chagned dramatically since beta, you are quite wrong.

The space marine Assault Troops (I don't remember how the other races are, but I think all the drop units are more or less the same in this regard), for instance, are quite effective against buildings and moderately so against vehicles. They also have a special attack which can do signifigant damage to any building or vehicle.

Four squads of these drop into your base and they can knock out one or two buildings in a second with their melta bombs, and tear away what's left with their swords and then just fly right back out before you can haul your army all the way back and wait for another opportunity if there isn't a quick response.

When I played in Beta my winning strategy with space marines was always to surprise the enemy with four to five squads of assault marines along with a ton of drop-pod dreadnaughts. (and later in the game just dreadnaughts and terminators in drop pods with a scout snuck in behind enemy lines to find a landing site)

Personally, what i always did to defend against this was keep a limited standing army of marines - probably just 2 or 3 squads - out in my front lines and my assault force back in my base untill they are ready to drop in behind enemy lines, and when they drop in the marines are kept close enough to my base that they can react to a counter-surprise attack.

Yeah, melta bombs are slightly toned down, from what I've read on the THQ forums, but I see how they could still be effective... the trouble is - if you commit nearly half of your squad cap to assualt troops, you are going to get hammered in the "main battle" by ANYTHING using F2 stance.

Sounds like it might be a good bargain bin purchase if the fans have delivered another couple of campaigns by then
