Ive started a few games using different strategies each time, first I tried a fleet of buses and mail trucks but they dont pull in enough money to pay for themselves. I restarted and tried trains. Trains make plenty of money, but not enough to make you rich quick as it is very costly to lay down tracks and buy trains. So restarted again, this time with planes. Unfortunatly a blimp crashed in one of my two airports the day after I took out a massive loan from the bank to buy three new planes. I quit out of frustration.

Wheres the money at early on? And are subsidies (i think thats what they're called) worth chasing after?

Been a few years since I played this game.

You had the right idea with trains, although the trick is shifting the right cargo. Mail and passengers will net high income, but you need fast trains.

In the temperate setting, don't bother with monorail. Standard rails will be accepable until maglev. For tropical and arctic settings, you will have to upgrade to monorail

Subsidies and trains are the way to go for the medium to long distances. For short distances, well, I'd have to say that it's not worth the investment in a train or the constant bother of trucks either.

Subsidies add up, and will give you a significant edge.
