@ lord of the mark + pg,

cheers for the info guys - i thought he was meaning the 'Matrix' games(of the film), which are worth staying away from too

I've got starships unlimited - just not played it yet, my gaming pc of choice isnt powerfull enough for it - still i've heard good things said about it

oh and Space05us on the extremely long longshot that you might like football(you might call it soccer) - and sports management type games, for xbox 'LMA manager 2004' is one of the best looking and fun/deep games out on console.
So far on xbox i feel there are only a handful of must have games:

    1.KOTOR(played for two months)
    2.Morrowind(played for six months)
3.LMA manager 2004(still playing - near endless replayability)
    4.Halo(played for a month)
5.and from my gf reccomendation Thief3

i own 34 xbox games and these are the only ones that have kept my interest for more than a few days. Most of them gave me months of gaming fun and still do

You forgot Pirates of the Caribbean CoT.

If you haven't got KotOR on Xbox then you should definitely buy that first. It's a brilliant game however you want to play it, whether as "My first RPG" or as a serious RPG, as a hack-em-up or a 1337 power-game requiring careful levelling up of characters.

Do you like those management football games like championship manager or are you more an arcade football fan?
I was terrible at the arcade type football games - i only played SWOS in the management mode after my little bro would embarass me with 15-0 defeats !

              @Space05us

If you like short(like 10hrs short!!) very scripted type games with amazing production values but no real replayability then i hear 'Chronicles of Riddick' on the xbox is where its at, maybe the sexiest looking game around?

Ive played since CM1 but with CM4 its gone downhill, too many stats that have too small an effect and time wasting tasks that add nothing to the experience. I dont want a really simple game like LMA though just back to the days of CM97/98 or 01/02, with sensible improvements. SWOS is also excellent, although i remember it crashing at the end of every season in manager mode on the amiga i was stuck to the normal playing season, maybe it was my dodgy copy.

FIFA is more arcade, PES is more realistic. FIFA are obsessed with celebrity intro music, fancy menus and motion captured animation. AFAIK PES involves a lot more hand animation, each move of a player flows into the next a lot smoother, which really adds to the realism, its beautiful. Buy PES.

yeah i heard CM4 had gone a bit wrong. Still LMA 2004 has improved in leaps and bounds according to people who've followed the game.
Apart from not having quite as many players in its database as CM the only other thing i miss is not being able to recruit old players as potential coaches.

The big thing i like in LMA 2004 is the match screen(the highlights are bad though after the game- the camera angles are awful). I guess from SWOS days i just like to see a game, even if i dont actually control the players

Atarti is releasing for Xbox and PS2 a remake of their classic games - which all will be on one disc. There will be one game that was made but never released included. I wonder if they will have that Dig Dug game, mmmm?

In the past the community liked modability (see TOAW) but the economics dont work for that - sales of any one game are so low, that the developers repackage the same engine for a different battle and release it as a new game - HPS is most accused of this.
                      Have to agree here.

It's the year 2004, and Matrix especially hasn't really pulled anything innovative.

For example: War in the Pacific: It's a HUGE game, but is available through digital download ONLY. So you pay $80.00 or so, and download a 500 MB game.

What happens when you want to re-sell it? You're outta luck.

Also, the AI is so geared to historical moves that any deviation from it by the player will cause ridiculous results - one player won as Japan in early 1943

Many of their games, while interesting, rely on old school graphics and AI programming that went out years ago. This simply won't do.

However, while the graphics look old school, the computer requirements for the games are out of this world. For example: WaW (a turn-based game) looks slightly better than the old Axis & Allies game, yet it requires a 128 MB graphics card and 512 MB of RAM to play it.

Compare this with MTW: I can play this game with a 16 MB video card.

My suggestion is the MTW/RTW games - highly innovative and there are plenty of mods available. I am not a RTS gamer, but I can handle the MTW tactical battles with ease.

Also, Heroes of Might & Magic III (plus expansions).

If you like wargames, try the Panzer General 2 game. There are tons of new campaigns available, as well as all the other games in the 5 Star series.

EU2 is a great game, and IMHO, is still Paradox's best game.

Battlefront is coming out with Strategic Command 2. Looks quite interesting. It will be using an event system; and the screenshots remind me of Civ2.

                      Cheers!

For the x-box I really enjoy what Diss mentioned, as well as Ninja Gaiden and Ghost Recon. A lot of folks here have a phobia of games that require reflexes, but Ghost Recon, like Rainbow Six, is more about planning and setting **** up than reflexes. Ninja Gaiden is pretty much all action, but the controls are beautiful enough that once you get the hang of it, it's a fun game just to lose at.

The Age of Wonders series is an awesome fantasy strategy series.

For some reason I didn't enjoy KOTOR. Most of the characters felt contrived. The story wasn't great but it was okay. I can't really explain why it felt contrived where as I am perfectly happy with Baldurs Gate.
I do know that the battle strategy was rudimentary at best. Strategy of course is limited by third person perspective and only having Two party members.
My Biggest complaint of all was why couldn't I sell big Z into slavery??? Wookie whining is a terribly annoying thing.

I am however looking forward to KOTOR2, any thing which has Fearghus Uruquarts (and his new teams) name attached to it can't be bad.
