Don't bring 1 guy because you can't kill all the aliens with just 1 guy. sometimes even 3 is not enough.

Before entering the ship I get two people on either side of the door, one kneeling down and one standing up. Behind the one kneeling there is another soldier, and then I have about 3-5 other soldiers a few spaces away from the door, surrounding it in a semi-circle. If any alien steps out, it'll have 7 guns pointing at it.

When entering the ship I first send in the guy who is standing up next to the door. He'll usually have a primed grenade ready and sometimes I prefer to use someone with a cannon aswell. He steps in and, if there is an alien, dies. The next person comes in and hopefully kills the alien, and then runs to the closest corner and covers the next door. I slowly file people in, each one stoping with their back to a wall and facing a door. I go through the entire UFO like this untill I finally come to the last unopened door, which I again surround like I did with the original entrance and proceed similiarily. That last room is always a death trap, though.

Always do terror missions during the day. Hell, for that matter do all missions during the day. To keep sites from disappearing you just need a craft targetting it, so flying interceptors to a crashed ufo works well. You just have to be careful when it gets low on fuel - you need a replacement before it turns around and goes home. Meanwhile, your skyranger flys to a spot just near the crash site and waits until it is daytime for that mission. Hooray.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

          Spoiler:
You find the location of the main alien base by interrogating high-ranking enemies. You then invade the enemy base and kill them all. Hooray.

I pretty much do the same thing, but wasn't sure how to fully explain it. So I just gave a rough draft of what I do. Though I don't use grenades. I think destroying too much stuff inside the ship reduces your loot you salvage from the ship (a very big money maker). I try to put my guys on either side of the door, and hopefully in such a way to avoid getting hammered by a grenade (though I never see aliens use them inside ships iirc)

in addition to skanky's comment that's why I said you need to use alien stun devices (can't remember what they are called) along with alien containment in your base to capture
                Spoiler:
                alien commanders

capturing lower ranking aliens such as navigators I think also provides useful things to research. I don't bother with the average joes.

Not terror missions, though. You need to respond as fast as you can.

Especially terror missions. As long as the mission gets done the country in question is happy.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure that right-clicking opens doors. That way you can look into ufo rooms before entering and deal with aliens before they deal with you.

I do, sure, they're nice for reconnassaince. They're expendable, which in a way makes them invaluable. They're damn expensive though. By the time I get heavy body armour I'll rather take people instead.

Only in TFTD. UFO unfortunetly does not have this feature. It almost redeems everything that's wrong with TFTD.
