The view was mostly top-down at a a slight angle, although calling it isometric would be going a little too far, but it also had sideways-scrolling platform sections too. Though these were rubbish, and just detracted from the rest of the action.

hmmm a famous game made in the early 90's, with shells in it and a top down view in a kinda isometric way and you start as a dead beat aiming to retrive your lost glory or something like that?

It's obvious to me that whatever game this is, I probably haven't played it. That or you've done a VERY good job of fooling me.
On the assumption I've never played said game, my only hope is to google this stuff... I doubt I'll get around to that, though.
