  • vivendi closing Sierra and Impressions?

yeah, saw that elsewhere. Though they will keep the Sierra name. Also heard that Impressions guys were forming a new company under a different name to make citybuilders.

    Your thoughts?

The Sierra as i know it is long gone and for nostalgia there's always FreeSCI.

Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

I'd heard that Vivendi was itself struggling? So i guess if it controls the other names then it follows it would need to restructure its assests?

It a shame but for me most of the good games companies from times gone(Microprose/SSI/Sierra/Impressions/etc) have been bought up by the evil empire, and been responsible for some real awful software - so much so that the names mean nothing to me now(when once they stood for quality).
Its the reviews and the gossip on the forums that make me purchase a game these days, not the company making it

Sierra name = Atari name; doesn't mean anything to me, as well it shouldn't; the company's dead, and been dead for a while. If not legally then game-creation-wise.

New citybuilder - a mix of and .

Because I love them, citybuilders, and have been an active part of the community for the past few from the get-go, including the upcoming Children of the Nile.

Because for this CotN game, they are using the old Empire Earth engine, and it doesn't look so hot. Though they've said many times they've improved upon it, so I am hoping for the best. Though admittedly, the transition from 2D to 3D has not always been successfuly for franchises like this in the past.

I still love that Caesar II. Unfortunately the copy I have is so trashed that it hardly runs anymore on my computer.. Oh well at least I have good memories of it as one of my first CD-ROM games. The game was a whopping 20 MB

Sierra is dead already, as others have said, alas.

I was about to ask, have Sierra released anything of interest lately? Alas, they were once giants.

I can't say that I'm too sorry to see Sierra go - while they certainly released more then their fair share of classic games, their corporate strategies bugged me. Their habit of spamming your computer in advertising material was particularly anoying - every time I installed one of their games I had to hunt through the task bars and hard drive to remove links to Sierra websites, demos for games I'm not interested in, etc. This was always a big disincentive for me to let anything by Sierra anywhere near my computer.
