I can relate to this ... now.
I downloaded a copy of HoMM2 a couple of years ago from one of the slightly less reputable 'abandonware' sites but never got around to trying it before my hard drive crashed.
Thanks to this thread I picked up a copy of the HoMM3 compilation (I'm thinking of calling this the AOGE - for Apolyton Other Games Effect

Played around with it a Sunday night expecting to be reasonable entertained for a couple of hours. Didn't notice the clock again until a bit after 03:30.
