Yeah, this sounds like the same thing I ran into last time I tried playing it.

I'm having a hard time remembering what exactly I did... but I think what worked was downloading a DOS mouse driver exe and adding a command line into the settlers exe to run it before the program started.

...I was more concerned about the downloads

And you wouldn't by any chance know where to find this dos mouse driver exe, and what to add in the command line?

you should be able to get the driver easily enough on google... try searching for msmouse.exe

As for the command line.... I'm not sure, but I think just adding it to the front of the command line under the settlers.exe properties>program tab would work.

I found the mouse driver, but is it nessecary to install it? the dll files can easily be extracted from the installation file, but I'm not sure what to put in the command line... should I refer to mouse.exe (from the extracted files) or to the installation?

Run msmouse.exe and then add C:\msmouse\mouse.exe to the command line before C:\XXX\Settlers2.exe (or whatever)

Do you mean in the command line under properties for s2.exe you write:
                  "C:\msmouse\mouse.exe F:\Games\S2\S2.EXE"

Doesn't work though... a msgbox says:

                      F:\Games\S2\S2.PIF
Invalid program file name, please check... bla bla bla

That is if I do it in the shortcut to the game... if I do it in S2.exe it doesn't make a difference

Do you know where to find the patch? I can only find links to the Blue Byte site, but they don't have the patch anymore

That's funny. I tried it on a program just to see if that command line worked, and it seemed to.

                              Strange

I just got Virtual PC (from Microsoft), where I just installed Win98SE (took quite a while... longer than usual)... I hope this makes it possible to play the game while being in WinXP...
                              I'll find out tomorow
                              *fingers crossed*
