  • The Settlers II...

    ...and WinXP...

Does anyone know how to get it working?

I can get the vanilla game working fine, but when I try install the Mission CD it stops working. For some reason I can't use my mouse in the game anymore... well, actually it's already in the menu it stops working
I've tried the WinXP compatibility mode, but that never does any good

I was hoping someone here has an idea on how to get it working?

Ah, who needs a mouse anyway?

Try running it under a dos emulator, like DOSbox.

I remember having a similiar problem when I had win98... I hade to activate a mouse driver in the DOS prompt first or something.

But if it works for the vanilla game it seems unlikely to be a driver issue.

Not neccisarily. Settlers had a pretty unique system for handling mouse ports (it was designed so that you could use two mice at the same time) and the gold edition may of tweaked it a bit.

I remember successfully playing it in win98 though. This was at a time where some games did still require dos drivers, and IIRC Settlers2 was not one of them.

I've never had problems with this in Win98...

Yeah, I'd say it's an XP incompatibility issue. I have an old box with win98 installed just for this eventuality. That doesn't help you though.

Well, if that's the case DOSbox would still probably be the best sollution....

I have the game working fine, albeit without sound, but that is the vanilla version so that comes as no surprise.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

I'd better try dosbox then... Hoping it makes it work... I do have two OS installed, but it's annoying to have to restart just to play some old games...

If you have win98 installed already just use that. A restart is less hassle than setting up DOSbox and playing it that way.

But I often (almost all the time) have certain programs running, which should be shut down as seldom as possible

When I start the game (with mission cd) it says:
Mouse Driver - Unknown mouse type detected
I tried to search for other places for S2, but so far I've only found one site, which is in German:
This website is for sale! siedler-welt.de is your first and best source for all of the information you’re looking for. From general topics to more of what you would expect to find here, siedler-welt.de has it all. We hope you find what you are searching for!

In the faq area they don't mention this problem, but I've noticed something 'strange' in the faq:
Under 'how to update' they have two parts: Update without the Missions CD, and update with Mission CD... when reading about how to update with the Mission CD, they say the usual stuff: Download to dir, execute, but at the end they write: If you have the Mission CD, don't update

In the forum they say that nobody has managed to get it working with DosBox

But I found a link inthere for another german site. Some people have started programming S2.5, which should have MP (online) and lots of other tweaks (like diplomacy)... They haven't made that much yet (only recently started), but they do have some early beta versions avaliable for download... Can't wait for this
