Well, it looks like its an Sa- something, tossup between Tuberski, HongHu, and Spaced. I'll go with HongHu, it's the most clever concealment of the clue. Something that the devious Ljube would do.

That would seem to point towards our American friend, Thomas Theben Jefferson, and our own dear satirist and noted deviant, Compte Tuberski de Sade.

But pencils are made of graphite, despite the core being called a "lead". The fact that lead is associated to pencils (in fact, "a pencil" in Finnish is "a lead pen") comes from times of ancient Egypt and Rome when they were indeed made of lead. However, graphite has been the preferred material for centuries now. Eco's Name of the Rose took place in the middle ages, if I recall correctly.
