Well, I'd say no. IMHO, it's not good to do so. But there have been precedents, and noone complained much, so I imagine you can, and furthermore, this could be one of them.

EDIT: I assume you are wondering if one could guess a word that is a verb in participle form. If you meant instead if you could ask to participate, then what alva said.

Yes, I meant if that WORD could also be a conjugated verb, or if it needs to be an infinitive.
