  • PROJECT: Restoring CTP1 Space Layer

OPening this thread for LordLighting who has an interest in bringing it back.

    from wikipedia
Players can toggle between "Earth view" and "space view". All land and naval units are exclusively terrestrial, although most land units can be launched into space inside a cargo pod by a rail launcher in cities or via a space plane.

Space fighters and space planes can freely travel in space and in the atmosphere. While the SWARM warrior can survive in space as well as the earth, it cannot launch itself into space. There are also some units that exist in space exclusively (i.e. cannot make a re-entry into the atmosphere).

Space produces no resources, as it is a vast void. However, once a space colony is built, players can build food pods and assembly bays to produce resources for the colony.

I want it too, would be awesome indeed. Its a pitty Activision didnt released CTP1's source code. Having the Space layer would increase the gameplay time greatly.

Great thing, I loved it, too bad the AI was dumb at it...

Actually this is a lot of work. And this is just the part to come to the level of CTP1. Even more work has to be done to make the AI use of it. Well space is a nice feature but we have better things to do like improving the AI and fixing bugs. So unless you find some programmers with enough time...

          Just a couple of words

I, personally, felt very dissapointed when CTP2 went out and the Space Layer was removed. I had played dozens of hours planning Swarm invasions, building Space Cities, etc...

Space allowed travelling, almost ignoring map size, since a single jump on a Space Plane could bring any unit anywhere in no time.

However, since this breaks Tamerlin's Rule, I hope seeing a mod with this feature, or bringing back a CTP1 mod, someday

I browsed the code the other day (scary thing sometimes as it gives me ideas)

Maybe there is a way to do the space layer by making it like the 'fog layer'?

that would give it the grayed out over space look. then add a flag for space cities and units not to be grayed out

units would need a space movement to move when this layer is activated, when its not activated cities and units are hidden and not visible on the map.

            just thoughts.

for the record I still dont have ctp1 so I haven't tried the space layer but I have seen before :embarrassed:
