I don't know if this has been mentioned before but when two players both with windows xp try to play a multiplayer game, it doesn't work. No players with windows xp can join another player's game who is using xp.

Is the same still true of the playtest builds we've produced? -

Nothing has been done specifically to fix this, but the code is being compiled with more modern libraries (and a new version of the compiler too, I think), which might make compatibility problems like this just go away... (It's not very likely, but it's worth a try

Here in my network I play with two times windows XP. One with XP Prof. and one with the XP home edition. It works also in both configurations no matter which one is host or client. Also with all versions, the original 1.11 and the 2004[1].04.03 apolyte.

What about service packs installed? I have service pack 1 with winxp pro and i cant host another XP player, although i dont know what service pack they had.Call to Power 2: Apolyton Edition - download the latest version (12th June 2011)

I was using Windows xp home and the other player was using windows xp pro and we both tryed to host and failed. We both have cable internet, no firewalls or anything.
