But we're not that organized yet. Hopefully, once the code is actually online more experienced people from the open source community will turn up and want to get involved.

And I hope you find us just as friendly around here as you folks over in Colorado Springs.
I'm a professional programmer, although I haven't done open source. I know what's involved. I plan to look at the source code, and play wiht it at least.

I also talk to Ireland on a regular basis, and I'm sure Englanders are just as friendly.

    • Now is the time for a prospective project leader to step forward. At the moment, as several people have pointed out, we are in danger of falling apart at the seams .

      • I *think* we can't use sourceforge. By the terms of EULA, we aren't allowed to put the source anywhere outside Apolyton, are we?

        • You know, quietly watching how everyone has gone off with no organisation, direction or ideas on where each individual is looking, I can only direct everyone back to the first few posts of this thread.

I proposed making a team list, and some direction goals right down to specific areas each person can look. And everyone told me to shutup. Well, I'm certainly laughing now.

          Told ya so!

          By me 28-07-03:

          Locutus:

While yes I agree with you, I just wanted to remind everyone of the need for colaboration. From the way people have been talking since it was announced by Winnie it's appeared like every man and his dog was going to jump in and do what they wanted.

It's more in the way of a team approach, a setting down of how to go about it, some boundaries if you will. Don't need a thousand ctp2.exe's being uploaded to the directory now do ya?

The problem(s) at this point are that people fit into basically 3 groups:

            1) Those who can compile the code and thus make changes.

            2) Those with coding abilities, who can spot errors in the code and recommend changes, but can't implement them -- yet.

            3) Those who can't compile and/or program but have pet projects they would like to implement.

The project leaders need to come from Group 1, with support from group 2. Groups 1 and 2 should be posting in this forum and for clarity, Group 3 should have a place to post suggestions either another sub-thread to this one or in the CtP2-Creation/AI/Mods/Scenarios forum. (Of course this post itself violates that rule, but what can you do?) The suggestions from Group 3 are actually very good, but pre-mature at this point as groups 1 & 2 are working step 1 of the plan -- the Bug Hunt.

For project leader, I nominate you John, if you are up to it.

            • ahenobarb, there is a fourth group of people, Apolyton members that don't have any pet project, a group of posters that just want the better for CtP2 but has nothing other than their good will to offer.

If the current situation continues long enough I might take up the position, but I seriously think I wouldn't make a good project leader. During university holidays I'm practically out of contact, and even in term time my attention tends to fluctuate fairly wildly. I'm all involved in the source at the moment, but in a couple of months I will get bored and stop, and then return in another couple of months.

Extra responsibility will make that happen less, perhaps, but I doubt that I can escape it entirely.

Well, in a similar request earlier in this very same thread I had stepped forward to organize and direct all effort that would be put toward the project. My offer is still in effect so I have no problem to take care of the details needed to run a project like that if that's ok with all you.

Don't worry about that JB, it was a natural reaction to the event of the release of the source code. We'll see lot of entusiasm, disorganization and a load of ideas here and there for the next days but it will calm down
Perhaps we'll see some working done in different directions and ad-hoc, to solve some first problems that will or have arised, like succesfully compiling the code but that's welcomed.

In the meanwhile a project team should be created but with the official support of the Apolyton stuff (Locutus, Solver, MarkG, DanQ...) with a thread topped to start organizing things a bit and the rest will follow in time.

I'll come up with a draft myself - most likely tomorrow - and if you find it useful we can start from it. Just let me take a look at the source first

                          • please read my posts in the very old Best of Both worlds thread about Locutus's mod (sure alot of you can remember) i posted many! of my ideas for CtP2 there and I would really like you to look at them and consider them, many of them are good ideas from civ1, civ2 and civ3, but some are original or from other games all realistic, fun and tottaly do able.
Things like barbarian encampments, barbarian leaders, history of the world messages etc etc

if u can find the thread in the modding forum somewhere it would be worth your while, plus i really dont want to have to re-post many of my ideas .

If I could program myself i would love to mod this game myself :'(

                              • I can't remember if this is where I posted earlier, but Activision licensing just asked me if people were still interested in licensing the CTP name. Let me know - they'll give an estimate.
