No, you can use any mapsize you want. I once played on a 5x500 map onceFun for once, but not really worth repeating...
For random maps or if you're planning to design your own scenario, you can simply change the values in const.txt (but if you make really major changes the random maps will look messy, you'll have to adjust the values in map.txt as well to compensate).
For existing premade maps/scenarios, just check the Directory. Or the scenarios the game shipped with: the Alexander scenario uses something like a 90x150 map IIRC.

Locutus here’s an idea . the map has to be square the playing area (the tiles you can build on move on etc ) don't have to be you can create a new terrain type which will blank this tile off. so a city could still grow over this null tile the city would not profit form the tile, in this way you could designee a map which is based on a different shape like triangle.(but this would not work on a random map).this would work excellently for a map surrendered in deep water but with other maps you may have a hard time getting the idea to function correctly."Every time I learn something new it pushes some old stuff out of my brain" Homer Jay Simpson

Yes, that is exactly what I did in CtP1 to make it possible to play the game on a flat map (on random maps as well, it's not too hard to preplace terrain in SLIC). It would be quite easy to copy that principle in CtP2 if you wanted to (but use a more sophisticated implementation as SLIC2 is much more powerful), although it would only be useful in very specific situations.
