  • Legal to burn a copy of the original install disc?

I was going through some old games to see what I had that would run on my roomie's old school laptop. I found this game as well as Civ II (still one of the best games ever) and some other stuff. I knew it needed a patch so I Googled, which led me here.

Anyway, my roomie is going to install this on her laptop, but I'm curious if I can make a copy of the CD so we can play LAN games. Just curious if there is a stipulation in the licensing which might prevent me from doing this legally. I know it's considered 'open source' to an extent but IIRC the source code was only released for use by this community.

No biggie either way. I can get another disc for $8, I'm just curious. I apologize if this is a repost. I didn't see this in the FAQ and the search feature doesn't seem to like me.

    Thanks!

Sorry, even though its open source the Activision EULA requires a legal -not a copy - version of the game to use the patch we are working on. hope that helps and please report any problems you have so we can try and fix it

      Hi,

And I would just like to add to that, that I can highly recommend buying an official version of this game, don't know if you ever played it before, but with the mod Ages of Man or the Apolyton Edition patch, it's an awesome game, blows the other civs right out of the water in my opinion

I think Vivainne is referring to the 1.11 Activision patch, which would probably be a better idea for a LAN game. Otherwise of course the sourcecode project patch is best for singleplayer.

It's probably illegal or at least a grey area, but to be honest I don't think anyone would care if you copied the CD, for a simple LAN game between friends.

Thank you all for such prompt and unassuming replies! I was honestly quite surprised to find this game still available @ retail in any form what with Activision dumping it. I'm even more surprised to find they released the source code.

OK so I am going to pester you with another question.
Is there more than one EULA or is the patch an extension of the original? I ask because I am writing a program that combines GPL and proprietary elements. As such, I cannot redistribute the GPL elements, but I can run it as a web (browser based) service and use a Servicemark provided that I retain the original copyrights in the source code.

So, does anyone retain rights to reproduce copies of this game for retail sale? Not that I anticipate a retail market for this particular game but this sort of licensing model has interesting potential. What Firaxis did with Civ IV is also rather innovative in terms of how they released and licensed it. CTP2 was more the result of Activision cutting losses on support than innovating a license agreement but it's still different.

I believe Activision still holds the distro rights and i think sub it out like they did to the french xplosiv version
