  • Population and tiles worked

I was just re-reading some of the stuff on this topic. I thought I understood it but now I am not sure.

A size 1 city works the city tile and 1/6 of the surrounding 8 tiles.

    Why 1/6?
There are 8 tiles in the first "ring". Why not 1/8?

When the population reaches 7 the second ring is worked. Doesn't make sense.

There are are 12 tiles in the second ring. So 1/12 makes sense here. Haven't thought about the next ring.

    Comments?

Heres 3 good threads that should explain it all.

But if you ask why did they chose some rings to have different number of workers to # of tiles, I dont know.

Well, that's exactly what I am asking. I have been playing this game for years on the mistaken premise that 8 workers were needed for the first ring.

How I managed to continue this long without waking up to the this fact is a bit of a mystery. Didn't think I was THAT dumb.

Just to elaborate this is an important issue. I tend to improve the first ring only at first and then create specialists until I have enough population to develop the second ring. My math has claearly been off for some considerable time!

Ah well, change is good as a holiday.

It depends, IIRC Cradle cities pop the second ring at 9 (could be 8), so if youve been playing that then you may have been on the right track. (assuming the maxworkers were set to the same as the pop for that ring)
