Any mod except Apolyton Edition is ok, because so far we have for the Apolyton Edition only playtest builds no official 1.2 build. And as working on the Apolyton Edition includes rhules changing, I fear that it could keep us from making changes or posting a new playtest version. At least I don't think it is a good idea to offer new versions during the tournament, except hot fixes.

I've actually been playing WAW! alot recently and its definitly a challenge. I find communism to be a bit overpowering though but its still fun.
CTC has alot of cool features too though. The AI is much more focused it seems, and the AI is more proficient with airplanes and nukes IMO.
I would personally prefer that pollution be turned off in both mods. Managing happiness becomes nearly impossible in both mods, and tends to hurt the computers more than the human player.
I'm happy with WAW. Never played it so I'm curious to test it out.
Can I suggest that you try to max out either Ice/Tundra, Desert/Sand, or Jungle. Just for the challenge of having difficult terrain to build and expand on.

I liek islands and navies too, the problem is it will really weaken the AI. They aren't capable of launching a decent over-seas invasion as of yet. Perhaps continents with muliple civs on each one would be a good comprimise, but the map would probably would have to be edited for that. And the AI would still have trouble with that...

No actually I won rather easily. I had it on Hard setting and a moderate amount of water, which was in my favour given the AI's weakness regarding the launching of ocean battles and amphibious assaults, etc.
I think it was mostly tedious. Research was a long time in coming, which I suppose is just part of the mod and time span/years it covers.
It's not a bad mod in any respects, it just didn't seem as fast paced as the others.
