  • Win2K problems

Hi - I just decided to dust off CTP2 and give it a go again, but the game keeps crashing as soon as I try to run it. (It is patched to 1.11, no mods - clean install) When I try to run it, a little window pops up stating a logfile will be created (the Windows logger).

I have all the latest patches for my hardware that I know of. Windows 2000 has been patched as well. The game just won't run.

Any ideas, or user-made patches/tweaks that I could try to get this game working again? Thanks...

Follow up: I've even tried using no cd patches, with no success.

Ok, after a lot of searching and many audio/video tweaks and upgrades, I still cannot get the game to run. I have finally found a link to something that might be my problem, and that the game may not be completing its installation, even though it says 100%.

I was able to install the game on my laptop with XP on it, no problem. The music and screenshots showed more than on this Win2k install. It just seems apparent that its not finishing the install process.

Has anyone got any suggestions on how to get around this problem? (I even tried copying files from the XP install to the Win2k install, but no change) If not, I hope the source code team can kindly put this as a minor priority fix, as I know I'm not the only one with this problem now.

Do you have admin rights? If not, that could explain why the install isn't completed as you don't have permission to alter the register and the like.

I'm not sure if this works on Win2k, but if you boot to safemode in XP you can log in as the user 'Administrator' (that only appears in safemode). You could try this from Win2k as well and if that works, try to install the game from that account.

Yeah, I thought that might have been the problem, but I set up this login with full admin rights, same as the default login.

I just tested this game on another clean install of Win2k and it ran fine, so I'm guessing its some sort of hardware incompatibility on my system...

I met the same problem when I was under Win2000, as you wrote it the installation sometimes does not end properly.

On Win2000 the process ran smoothly until it reached the 96% or so threshold, the process then hang at 96% for a minute or so (if not more) until the "installation complete" message popped up. When I tried to run the game I think it crashed (I don't remember exactly as it was something like two years ago)... I had to install the game several times until the process breached the 96% barrier and ended adequately.

Not that it will help you, but I am running it on W2k without problems. It might be a problem with the CD-speed. If you can lower it, it might help. (this I read for other programs on other forums, espacially for laptops).

Actually you also might want to lower the performance of W2K.

Another thing: Are you using any Anti-virus-SW or similar, while installing?

Can't seem to lower it, sadly. If it is the speed, that sucks, because if I could just get it to install completely (assuming that's why it won't run), then I could use the no cd patch to bypass the cd drive.

I just have a hunch that its a hardware conflict with either the sound card or motherboard chipset, just by the nature of the crash.

I don't have any active anti-virus, I scan files manually as I d/l them. The only program I have active is Zone Alarm (and yes, I tried installing ctp2 with ZA disabled).

I'm going back to a full tower by getting an ASUS mobo either today or tomorrow, so maybe that will fix this mess.

Follow up - I just got a new mobo (ASUS P4G800 Deluxe) with a new Audigy 2 and Radeon 9200 (my old video card broke down). I am using the same install of Windows (I didn't format) and tried to uninstall/install all the proper drivers. Everything on the computer works fine. All other games works fine. CTP2 still won't run, same crash occurs. I did uninstall/re-install ctp2, and it did take the normal amount of time to install this time, but still didn't run.

I did just install the new playtest patch and that got me through to the game at last. However, the screen flickers badly, like the graphics of ctp2 don't like my video card or something. Its pretty much unplayable despite being able to run it now with this playtest patch...

I wouldve formatted, installed XP and fresh device drivers, not least to elimate any factors with any future problems.

As child of Thor suggested in the other thread try lowering your hardware acceleration for your graphics card. Ive played CtP2 on a PC with a Radeon 9200 at full hardware acceleration with no problems, so it could be a driver thing.

Hmm... Can you describe the screen flickering - is it the same problem as described by ADG in this thread, or is it a more frequent sort of flickering?

Yeah, I would say its close to what is described in that thread - its about every 2-5 seconds. When it does flicker, it flickers repeatedly for a couple seconds.

I've tried different screen depths/resolutions/frequencies with no change in the problem.

                          Black_Night1,

I know that there are some issues with some ASUS motherboards and SoundBlaster Live! audio cards. Check if your Sound Card and your Graphic card do not share the same IRQ. If yes, it should be changed and some motherboards allow you to give a specific IRQ to the graphic card through the BIOS. As a last resort you can change the PCI slot of your Audio Card so that another IRQ is given to the audio card (does not work everytime) and avoid PCI slot number 1.

Another possibility would be to check the AGP Aperture Size in the BIOS. The AGP Aperture Size should not be higher than the number of Mo of your AGP Graphic Card's memory. It sometimes solves some problems.

Thanks for the help thus far.

AGP Apeture Size made no difference, no matter what setting it was. (I tried from 32 to 256)

There are also no IRQ sharing problems. I checked all other IRQ's as well, just to be thourough.

I will add that I do have the screen flicker problem in a few other games as well (Klingon Academy, Bridge Commander, Battlezone II, to name a few). I notice that all the games that give me flicker problems are pre-DX 9 era games. Not all give that flicker problem, but just some. Its weird.

Its playable, but not for long, as I tend to get a headache after trying to focus through the flickering.

Yes, it is really weird, I have the latest DirectX version and I have never experienced problems with games.

Have you tried to run these games with the Windows Compatibility Tool using Win98 compatibility?
