I thought maybe when you said you turned it to '0' it was the volume control.
When you first boot up the game you have a chance to go into the all the option screens. The one i usually go to first is the music selection screen(not sure what its real name is at this momment), anyway the biggest problem with the music is the fact it plays the same music(track) all the time, its a bug, but you can experiment with the music settings with things like 'Random selection' or 'repeat'(i think this is the default). Within these options will be one to have no music. That's the one to select...........still its been a while since i played with this so i could be making it up - in which case you need an answer from one of the regular players

In the pre-game menu's you have 'Sound' and 'Music' options - the sound one controls the volume for all sounds in the game(Its also the one you access in the in-game menu options tab). I can just set the music in this menu to '0' and i cant hear it anymore......so i'm not sure where your problem comes from?

If setting the volume to 0 in the Sound menu doesn't work (which is odd but not impossible, I guess), you can also disable the music by clicking on the Enable/Disable Music button (or whatever it's called) in the Music menu. That should always work.
Alternatively, remove the CD from your drive while playing the game
Setting the music volume probably just sends some signal to the CD driver software, so it depends on your CD driver what it does - I seem to recall I once heard that some drivers didn't actually bother to implement variable volume.
