  • The hell..? Starvation? O_o

    So, I'm playing CTP for more or less the first time. Having played a lot of Civ and Civ2 (though I'm not going to claim much skill at either ^^;), I wasn't too bad at it. One problem I had, though, was starvation.

    For the most part, it wasn't an issue. For most of the game, my cities were happy and growing steadily. However, starting in the mid to late game, they'd begin to crash. I built all sorts of terrain improvements around them, but to no avail; they'd just keep losing people every turn until they hit a nice, low population.. around twenty or so. >.<

    That wouldn't even be that bad... but they started around 80-100. O_O

    Is there anything I can do?

    Yes there different way to increase your foods :
    1) Build aqueduc.
    2) In civ panel, you can change your food repartition for your civ... give more food to your civ (e less population grove but less starving cities too)

    I don't remember well (It is the second time in play CTP) but there's some wonder which allow you to have more food (maybe stonehedge)...

      How do you manage to have city with 80-100 units of population ?
      Did you use the "scenario editor" system ?

      I don't think that such city could exist (except maybe in the diamond age) ...

        Nope; didn't edit anything. I believe this started in the mid to late Genetics Age.. might've been the Diamond Age. A couple (at least two, maybe three or four) of my cities did have 80-100 population (and a few more weren't terribly far behind).. but then, I was playing on Chieftan, sooo.. ^^;

        And yeah, I know about Aqueducts, and Beef Vats (though with the difference in how much they ate and how much was produced, it wouldn't have helped.. o_O). I tried maxing for food, and playing with the Rations, but it didn't help much. Tile improvements didn't give enough of a benefit...

        My best guess as to what happened is that I had a wonder giving me more food that expired. I'm not sure.. I know Stonehenge does that, but there are probably one or two more... anyway, if my store of food was high enough, it might have taken decades or centuries to eat away at before there was any starvation. Still, I don't know of any way to help the situation.. ~_~

            I don't think so. I don't remember what government I was at that point, but the growth was pretty good...

              Once your city hits the 20pop mark, try slowing its growth rate down by selling the improvements which helped you get there in the first place!!
              It's worked for me! However, there's a more tedious and time consuming alternative. It consists of micromanaging your cities to the point where you manipulate every single worker within the city radius, in a way that allows them to produce just enough food to ensure you don't get another pop for the next 240 or so turns! I was crazy (foolish?!) enough
              to do it in a game a while ago, and it worked beautifully!!

              On the other hand, I think you did an amazing job just by managing to get 80-100pop in a single city! Very Cool!

                The only realistic way to get a population above 40 or so is to play on Chieftain level. On Chieftain, if you have a Celebration (happiness > 85 or so) in a city, it grows at a rate of 1 population point per turn. I'm assuming darkgrendel did this.

                A city with a Beef Vat cannot starve, as far as I know. I'm pretty sure the Beef Vat will produce as much food as a city needs. But I'm not certain of this, because I've never built one in a recent game. The pollution they create is horrible. (I suppose you could do it with the Gaia Controller, though.)

                A realistic population goal for a non-Chieftain-level game is 20-25. You don't need any more people than that in your cities.

                  Yeah, I had all kinds of celebrations. ^^;

                  All the food needed, eh? It says it produces five food.. the pollution doesn't matter much, though, with pollution turned off. ^^;;
