Why are the AI opponents such hard work?

You have to give them at least 2-3 gifts before they actually like me, then the next turn thy hate me again!

Its the same with every opponent on the map, even on chieftan!
In the end I just leave them alone, then they declare war!
Is there some sort of diplomatic trick to this?

The AI will hate you when you are the strongest civ on the planet!
Don`t give away too many gifts, they must think you are weak. Some AI characteristics prevent them from having friends.
There is no trick on this in the game.
Take it easy and try again.

The AI can really be useless. If you haven't done so, download Awesome AIPs. It makes the AIs a little more realistic. They won't go to war with you quite as fast. But, if you're a weakling, they tend to eat you up pretty good, too. Just a little smarter. There's no way to get the AIs to like you, even if you try to be "Mr Niceguy." But then, that's good. More reason for war, if they're always tearin up your landscape and demanding money, guess it's time to see how much destruction those stacks of nukes can do! Hit them in the mind! Don't worry about offering gifts, they won't think you're weak just because of that. Plus, I always offer maps if I know a particular civ has an advance I want. Butter them up and make ridiculous trades (like your knowledge of stirrip for their oil refining, they always seem to bite..)

I have never been in good relationship with any AI, exchange of knowledge is seldom in my game. Troops are the only way to talk to AIs.
