  • Apolyton CTP Info Adrift?

It seems we see less and less functional information regarding CTP here over the last few months. Nothing but reports on sales position or reviews of the game - is it really of value to look over reviews anymore? Plenty have been written and read already.

And all this MAC coverage.. I'm not a MAC user, what do I get out of MAC news? What happened to the interesting stuff like "new Patch for CTP?" (NOT MAC ones either!) or "Tips from the Kings" etc?

I suspect that the reason we see less about 'functional' news than before is because there's less of it to give. After all the game's been out there long enough that Activision isn't really interested in bringing out any new patchs for it. All they're interested in is bringing out the next version.

At this point the only real news about CTP is the various player mods. Eventually even those will dry up and blow away as these same players move on to other games.

As for the MAC coverage I have to agree with you there. I think that the reason for that is the personal preference of the people that put together Apolyton's site. I'd almost be willing to bet they themselves are MAC users and that they simply have a natural bias in favor of the MAC (MAC users have a tendency towards fanactism). I would suggest however that if this is the case they would be well advised to keep in mind that the vast majority of computer users are still PC based and that this isn't likely to change in the foreseeable future. So guys, if you want to keep your rolls filled you might want to even the coverage up a bit.

You are right about the lack of CtP news but that happens to all games. They have times when there is a lot of interest and then times when there isn't much. This also explains the reason why there is so much MAC coverage now. MAC CtP is in its heyday like the PC CtP was a while back.

I'm not a MAC owner or user but I disagree with you on the MAC issue. MAC coverage, as well as Linux, belongs here at Apolyton. That is part of what makes Apolyton so good. They cover Civilization, EVERY aspect of it. And, like it or not, that includes the MAC. Besides that, Apolyton is ADDing MAC coverage to the PC coverage, not replacing it.

As for the MAC preference by the people that put Apolyton together, Baston is who runs the CtP MAC area not Dan & Markos. So yes, he is going to be a bit biased. Just like some people seem to be a bit biased towards the PC.

        1) beyond a few files and a couple of stories, there is nothing about ctp that we know and havent posted

        2) patches and tips from developers are activision's job, not ours

        3) we were the first and we are the only to cover CTP2

        4) a few days ago we posted a new ctp1/2 interview

        5) recently we supported the creation and hosted Don's ctp maps site

        6) ctp for mac is much newer than ctp for pc, it is quite logical to have plenty of news

Please don't get me wrong. When I essentially agreed with the original post I wasn't advocating eliminating MAC coverage. I agree that every platform that supports CTP should get it's fair share of coverage. However, it just seemed that recently the MAC announcements seemed to far overshadow everything else.

As for the more recent release of CTP in MAC format. I admit I did not take this into account when I posted. That of course would have an effect.

Regarding patch releases I never stated it was Apolyton's responsibilty. It is however 'news' and Activision's lack of effort on this front does indeed mean a corresponding lack of news on this. If you don't got it, you can't give it.

Any computer game that's ever been released or ever will be released has a natural life cycle. It's released, it's hot, it's lukewarm, it's dead, it's replaced by the next hot thing. At this point I'd say that CTP still has a bit of life to it but the signs are already there, written as plain as day on Apolyton's main site.

I hope nobody at Apolyton takes this as criticism. It's not. In fact I greatly appreciate the effort that goes into this site on a daily basis. It's quite obvious that Apolyton is a labor of love for the people who work on it.

This is just the way things are and there's no use moaning about it when you turn around and find you can no longer find coverage on your favorite Pacman or Pong game. Too bad really. I liked Pacman.

Surprise. Yet again it becomes painfully apparent that any form of criticism of Apolyton is just unacceptable.

Its a sad thing when people literally fear speaking their mind about the negative aspects of something simply because they don't want to get in trouble with "the powers that be."

Exucse ME for expressing my opinion *again!* I'll head somewhere else where the idea of free expression is not immediately squashed with hammer by the Forum Gods.

                Paul D,

Hey man don't go anywhere. You expressed your opinion, I in turn, expressed my opinion. And Markos listed what they had/were doing to address your concerns. What is wrong with that?

Granted, I might of gone a little overboard. If I did, please accept my apology.

I am just tired of the Apolyton Admin always getting slammed for everything they *supposedly* do wrong. Nobody ever says, "Hey, your doing a good job. I appreciate all the hard work you put in to make this site what it is". Instead, everybody nitpicks about every small, insignificant thing they can find.

Side note: To be clear here, let me say, I am not part of the Apolyton Admin.

Skorpion makes an excellent point, we are too ready to have a go at people for not doing enough when they are in fact doing all they can do which is alot more than we do.

                      PaulD:

Are you insane? No one has attacked you for your criticism. Instead people have simply put up arguments for why they think your opinion is wrong.

There actions do not mean that criticism of Apolyton is unacceptable. Rather, they are just attempting to put forth a different opinion than your own.

I don't see how you have gotten "in trouble" for speaking your mind. Have you been banned from posting in the forum? It doesn't appear that way. Does getting in trouble mean that someone puts forth a point of view that differs from your own?

Simply put: You put up your opinion. Others countered with their own. They hardly squashed you with the hammer of the forum gods. If they really disliked your opinion and were as fascist-minded as you seem to profess they would simply have deleted your post instead of replying to it in a rational manner.

If anyone is being close-minded and unwilling to see all sides of the picture it is you. Get a grip.
