  • Discussion on gold/science/terrain

I play with the Medieval Mod and thanks to the invaluable work of WesW, Celestial Dawn (and many others) I find the computer actually beating me (not that I'm complaining .
I am always WAY behind in science and was wondering if you guys start your cities with max food then, when size 2, max prod? I usually do this as max prod usually brings in moderate gold for much needed science. When I get to size 4 I usually manually assign all subsequent workers to 'food' squares such as grasslands or swamps.
Never use science impovements since reading CD's spreadsheet on them verus gold improvements.
What are your opinions on early growth, use of terrain, scientists and early improvements. Basically anything to do with getting decent growth and science. =o)
    All replies much appreciated
    Cheers

At the beginning, I max production to get a warrior out. Then, I try to balance maximizing food with maximizing gold. You are so far behind that gold for science is very important.

I go city by city, the ones near mountains get production, the ones near the ocean get food. etc. usually my first and second cities are on a jungle/forest river so they get to make wonders. If there's a choice, always plant your city on a forest or jungle, its free production. Science for me usually waits until spies. I start out as a slaver, then move to clerics and keep the slavers on defense, then abolitionists, then spies

Ghen: You can't have slaves/slavers and abolitionists. What are you saying?

LogiK: in CD's mod you need to build science buildings if you want more science...
What I am doing is: if I have a city near ocean I max food to make it big and build science buildings to get much science. if I have a city near mountain first I max food and then at pop 3 I build mines, I also build gold buildings. The difference is that science buildings become more effective the bigger the city is whereas gold buildings depend only from the gold you initialy get which of course is more from mountains...(espesially with Diamonds!!!)
Don't forget that much production and much gold go together most of the times...
