  • 4:00 PM EAST: Call to Power enters the building

I just bought Call to Power this afternoon. (Don't be fooled by the thread I posted in the Call to Power II forum - Harvey Norman didn't have that, so I said to myself, "Hey, why not try out the classic version?" ) I must say I like what I've seen so far. I'm the Brazilians (samba samba! ), still in the ancient era, and thus far it seems very much like Civilization II in some ways but very very different in others. I especially like the way the jungles look like jungles.

I'll post more impressions as I run across them.
Everything changes, but nothing is truly lost.

Interesting Well, unfortunately you'll find that there's not much of a CtP1-SP community to share your experiences with but the MP community here is still *very* much alive... Also, there's really only one mod that's really worth the effort (MedMod), as opposed to the half a dozen or so for CtP2. But CtP1 is a good game as well, so I'm sure you'll have fun

        Looking forward to your feedback...

Thanks guys. I actually did run into a question just this morning.

I can't seem to get a treaty with anyone. Whenever I ask for one, they tend to say "I spit on your pathetic treaty" or something to that effect. The difficulty level is Warlord and I'm the second most powerful civilization. Any thoughts?

Also - are slavers worth it? I like the idea of kidnapping foreigners and forcing them to work in my quarries but I worry about slave revolts occurring or being incited.

              I offer this advice.
Keep your word, if you agree to not tresspass, DONT
If you agree to attack an enemy of a civ's DO IT

The ai takes into account your integrity. Go Figure??

Also, try offering some gifts..i.e. small multiple amounts of gold, map exchanges, tech offers, ect.

              Maybe that may help.

              Good luck!

You can also seek help in the MP strategy guide.

What can be used against other humans can also be used against the AIs.
First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win.

                  Troll,
You released a scenario? Where? I must have missed that - I would to see it...

                  Mr President,
It's been too long since I messed with CtP1 Diplomacy so I can't help you there but slavers are *more* than worth the while, probably the most powerful units in the game...

(Undocumented but *very* important hint: stack slavers with your armies when you send them into battle: if you win, your defeated enemies will be enslaved (you only get 1 slave per attack though) )

Umm unfortunately, it was released nationwide, in Trolldom but however, all the little Trollies still have that on top of their wishlist

                        Thanks, homeboys.

A couple of other questions have arisen, due to Harvey Norman, for some reason, selling Call to Power with a technology chart but no instruction manual.

How do I use the Workday, Rations, and Wages settings? I figured out that shortening the Workday and increasing Wages increases happiness. The former, though, seems to reset every once in a while.

When I check my intelligence on a civilization, it shows their personality type; for instance, the Americans I ran into today were Peaceful, and the Jamaicans were Slaver. What implications does this have for the civilization's behavior and relations with other nations?

Am I supposed to be almost off the power chart before the Renaissance? (Still on Warlord difficulty.)

Still about the diplomacy, my relations tend to deteriorate very rapidly. Is that due to not offering enough gifts, or to the fact that I was trying to befriend the "Militant" Turks and the "Slaver" Jamaicans?

                        * * *

A couple of other comments. I love Public Works and stacked armies; I'm really surprised they didn't use those in later Civilization games. I also like the Cities window that lets me copy and paste queues and manage all my cities at once.

MP, Worday increases Production, Wages increase happiness, decrease gold, and Food decreases food but increases happiness.

Those civs probably don't like you because you are sending a military unit into their territory. I always use stealth units (i.e. units with no ADRM) for exploring.

Oh, and regarding your question about Slaves:

Each military unit in the city can handle 3 slaves. So if you have 13 slaves in 1 city, and only 4 military units, your asking for revolution.

They get reset to the default every time you switch government, because each government has different default settings.

The power chart is dynamic so you'll never go off the top - unlike some games . But in the default rules you'll be in that position fairly soon even on Deity, I expect. Get the MedMod for more challenging AI.
