What combinations of units seem to work best? It seems that what works best is to have 2-3 units with strong assault capabilities, 3 units with strong ranged attacks, and 3-4 units that are good all around. In particular this stack,

    2 cavalry
    4 musketeers
    3 cannons,

is a renaissance era group that I've found to be particularly potent. Are there stacks using units from other eras that you've found to work well? I'm especially looking for stacks of ancient units, as I still haven't got the hang of waging war in the ancient era.

Have you tried just Samurai and Slaver? Because both have 2 move points, they can pick off weak units, and usually withdraw if they find phalanxes.
