What are some ideas for opening moves in CTP?

When I play against the AI (8 countries, Deity) I am always way behind for the beginning of the game. I usually do pretty good catching up later on, but it seems like it takes me forever to get momentum. AI will have 20 cities with population up to 12 or more in some, and tons of advances while I have 7 to 10 cities with few advances.

Any thoughts on beginning sequences will be appreciated.

I am very new to the game. I love the game but the documentation seems to be missing a lot of theory. It's a good thing this forum is here to fill in the blanks.

    Thanks

    Alan

I can give you some general pointers:

    - Focus on building settlers and warriors early in the game.
    - Explore as much as you can. Expansion is a key factor.

Map distribution (land game/island game and other terrain considerations) plays an important role as well.

Maybe you like to know that the AI has on Deity some starting advantages (That's one of the ways to make it harder for the human): e.g. more settlers and more advances so you have to catch up first.
