  • Brand New Start to CTP1

I enjoyed playing the original Civ many years ago and a few months ago, on impulse, I picked up a discounted copy of CTP1 in my local Electronics Boutique (only cost me a tenner). I haven't got round to playing with the thing seriously yet - just had a quick look at the tutorial.

    Anyway, my point is that after looking at some of the articles and posts on Apolyton, the general consensus seems to be that the standard game out of the box isn't too hot and installing mods is the way to go. My questions are;

Am I reading this right ?

Is it worth playing the game in its original form at all, or should I download some mods straight away ?

If so, which mods should I install ?

I'm sure that many of these questions have been answered before, and for that my apologies. It would have been good if there was a newbie FAQ for CTP1 which had this information, but I couldn't find it (unless someone knows different).

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help.

(NB for my Colonial chums, a "tenner" is ten Great British Pounds or about 6 of your fine US dollars)

Actually the way to go is not mods! Get the 1.2 patch and go to the CTP- Multiplaying section of the forum

PBEM is the way to go

But Mods are alot of fun also!

The generas consus is, yes, the out-of-box AI is poop, get mods, or play MP.

I would suggest playing until you can win on King level without thinking. (about 3 games), then get swap, so you can compare gameplay.

There was a thread here, called "A newbies guide to Mods" or something, but it dropped after the forum upgrade detatched it from the top of the forum
      The final summary was:
      1. Get the v1.2 patch
      2. Get the Unofficial v1.21 'hack' (also available on Apolyton)
      3. Get the MedMod (version 4.2 I think now... availablehere)

The MedMod is a build upon all the modding that has been done on CtP in the last few years. Such famous mods as "Celestial Dawn's - Play CtP as it should be" mod, the Apolyton Pack, Gedrin's refugee code, and Locutus' militia code, etc. Included, read the readme...

Wrong way around I think, $10 is £6
      Concrete, Abstract, or Squoingy?

Yes, for some reason people play SP with mods, MP without. Quite why this has become so prevelant, I am not sure, but the first MP game with the MedMod is coming to life soon, with any luck, and I hope more will follow.
