Running CTP1 on Windows 8

So I've just reinstalled the game, applied the 1.2 update, as well as the 1.21 workaround, but still no luck. The program immediately crashes with no attempt at startup, and I get this message:

(For some reason I couldn't insert the image so apologies if this came out weird)
Any ideas how I might work around this problem? I know with CTP2 I was able to find a patch here that resolved its issues fairly quickly. Thanks in advance y'all!

Have you tried running in a compatibility mode? Somewhere around the 98/ME era? Might even need to run as admin too. I know it won't work for me without the right compatibility mode.
