Thanks. That clears up a few things. In fact, those were such good answers that I have one more question. Let's say I have a city on an island that is only one square of land completely surrounded by the sea. The only way to take over that city is for someone to attack me with marines, storm marines, or swarm, right? Other units can kill units it the city, but can't actually take it over (like planes and boats), right? And is it impossible to use clerics, corporate branches, infectors, etc on such cities because there is no place for them to land to do their dirty work? I tried to use a cleric from a transport, but it didn't seem to work. Thanks for humoring me, I'm still getting used to the details of this game.

some more answers
actually, if the city is undefended, any military unit can capture it directly from a transporting unit.
thus, you can bring a (non-marine, ..) military unit with the ship and try to enter the city. if you cant, it is defended. otherwise, it is undefended and you directly conquer the city. marines, storm marines and swarms would regularly attack the city in this situation, even if it is defended.
land-bound stealth units cant harm the city, yes. only via sea-tunnels or if the stealth unit flies (like Subneural Ad).Baal: "You dare mock me ?"
O'Neill: "Baal, c'mon, you should know ... Of course I dare mock you."
