  • Changing colors00.txt

I'm a newbie (not the game, but the pack) trying the Apolyton pack, especially to play with the 24 player map. But 8 opponents who are all the same colour green is kind of hard, so I started experimenting with colors00.txt.

I changed the top "58" to "65", changed all the COLOR_PLAYER0 to COLOR_PLAYER16 settings and added new COLOR_PLAYER17 to COLOR_PLAYER23.

The result? 24 opponents all with different colours! Excellent! Except that the map in the bottom left corner is kind of "in negative" and the text on the CIV, MAX, LABOR, PRODUCTION, etc tabs is now green (and in all tabs on other dialogs) and all text box and list box borders in all game dialogs are yellow.

Before I experiment any further, has anybody got any documentation on how this file works? It seems that the COLOR_PLAYERx settings that I've changed (all of them) and new ones I've added have had some effects on other parts of the game "palette".

I think that the radar map (and maybe other stuff) uses the player colours as a basis for what colours it uses. There is a mod somewhere on Apolyton that adds the extra colours, and that radar map looks funny too.
    Concrete, Abstract, or Squoingy?

The game expects the colors for the radarmap to be on certain lines. If you put in extra player colors on those lines the game will think that those are the radarmap colors.

I have made a file, where all 32 players has different colors (some only slight, but they are different).

I have tried to keep the colors in variations, so the radarmap looks like a real map (several variations over the green, grey, brown and yellow colors - and use of the black as a nation color as well.

If it usefull can be discussed.

It is best on large and superlarge maps (or homemade even larger) where radarmaps means less since it is very hard to spot an enemy on the radarmap anyway on these sizes. It is very usefull as a navigation map.

        Somewhat lesser as radarmap.

I'll mail it to 3-5 if interested. If they say "ok" then let us have it in the Apolyton database. You can copy the 00color.txt file into existing games and back again with any other 00color.txt as you like, senario or default folders.

p.s. I have also a map.txt file for superlargemaps, where MOST - only MOST - of the annoying great small-lakes/swamps/forrest areas looks more normal. There are still settings in the file where certain choices on the rulers for ocean/land and island/continent that gives some small areas with (too) many small islands.
