If I want something other than ctp

If I want something other than CTP, which Civ game is the way to go?

I have a long history of paying games that are several years old, but am trying to break that habit. This doesn't mean that CTP has no value to me (quite the contrary), but I'd like to get "in" on a newer Civ game that's worth playing for years to come.

Since this board is for the die hard players, I thought you'd know which direction I might go, i.e. which game captures the flavor of CTP, which game is bug-free, which game has staying power, depth, etc.

Have you tried CtP2? (Oh, you will need mods to make it a good game, but once you have those... )
