Freeciv is a Free and Open Source empire-building strategy game inspired by the history of human civilization. The game commences in prehistory and your mission is to lead your tribe from the Stone Age to the Space Age.
Freeciv is an open source (GPL in this case - see www.fsf.org for details-) multiplayer version based on the original civilization game. The advantage of Freeciv is that the source code of the game engine is freely available for everyone to tweak and improve.
While Freeciv was developed for Linux the current versions of Freeciv can also be played on windows. The windows version now works out of the box without much problems. Please take care that you should read the instructions before trying to run FreeCiv. It has a LOT of features (far more than than civ2) but it may seem very daunting at the outset. You have been warned
Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.
Freeciv at the moment is good enough for SP and MP (with the emphasis on MultiPlay)
As for fun, well,..that comes down to your own taste and preference to try something new. The windows version now works straight out of the box but the visuals may seem a bit bare if you're treated to the graphic fest of Civ3 or CtP. It's a bit like a well designed kit car at the moment. Everything can be tweaked if you want to tinker or simply enjoy the ride instead.
The good thing is that Freeciv will always continue to get better as long as people keep playing...
