  • Just for the civ 2 users...

    I made this screenshot:
    http://hjem.get2net.dk/thue_janus_kristensen/civ2.png

Of course we cannot use the civ 2 tiles in the official freeciv, but it was still much fun seeing them in action.

    1. Are you planning to use the graphics from people.gif?

    2. Looks like there is a city name drawing bug.

      1) Eventually ; it is not very hard to do.
      2) Don't you see the same thing in civ 2 when you move a unit across a cityname?

Freeciv shouldn't be associated with copyright infringement in any way, so no. I would be the first to insist you remove it if you put it up on apolyton.

However, to be able to use the civ 2 modpacks which are freely distributable I have kept the gfx file format compatible; currently all you have to do is to replace the background colors with transparent and copy the FoW tile, and you can plug in your tileset; even those two might go away. So if you own a copy of civ 2 you are free to use the tiles from there.
But with all the mods there must be enough graphics to scrape together an alternative tileset for those who don't like hires.

Looks pretty good Thue, it's getting very close to civ2 now, and beyond

How do you manage the graphics overlays? In civ2 there are two terrain sets, one with (terrain1.gif) with the ground tiles and one (terrain2.gif) with areas (mountains, hills etc..) facing different directions to create realistic looking mountain ranges etc..

            How did you handle it?

Well, I look at the terrain of the adjacent tiles, pick the right overlay from terrain2, and then draw the pixels from the overlay that is not background onto the tile from terrain1. Did that sound simple? It is . Other parts like figuring out where on the screen to draw and how to handle overlap were less simple.

Use the source if you want to know the gory details! http://hjem.get2net.dk/thue_janus_kr...somet.diff.bz2 . Of special interest is probably fill_tile_sprite_array in client/tilespec.c , pixmap_put_tile() in client/gui-gtk/mapview.c and maybe updata_map_canvas() in client/gui-gtk/mapview.c
              .

My programming experience is limited to pascal (and a little python recently), most of it is mumbo jumbo to me. I'll take your word for it.

I can put together an original-artwork-only mod for you if you so desire.

BTW, are you planning text-file compatibility or backwards-compatibility?

That would be great! Freeciv already has 2 non-isometric tilesets in the standard distribution, and can choose among them on startup, so it will be no problem to have 2 isometric tilesets in the main distribution too.

Note that we currently only use the disorder pic and the explosion from icons.gif. Also, as mentioned, people.gif is not used yet. And city.gif is not used at all.

It would be much preferable to have the graphics under the GPL like the rest of freeciv. (mindseye agreed to contribute hires under the GPL.)

Umm, I am not sure I understand what you ask...
Freeciv has it's own text file format which is completely different, and probably superiour, to the civ 2 one (haven't really use the civ 2 one...), so no compatability there.

What about the windows version?? Are there 2 tilesets for this version too??? I never noticed any other ones. Or should I ask the windows guy? I know the windows version isn't finished yet because my Diplomats don't do anything!!!!! Anyway....I'm sure he will be finished soon.

My program is nearing final completion. I may wait until the Windows guy has the final version finished to see if I can add anymore options. Right now I'm trying to write the help documentation for the program.

Try starting the client as "civclient --tiles=engels"

                              Thue,

Alot of us (well, all of us I hope ) have the original version of Civ2 at home. What if we had the tool to convert those files to the Freeciv format ourselves? That way there wouldn't be any problem with the GPL. People could import there own graphic files if they wish.
