Thue, I went to the freeciv org site you listed and went to the downloads section. In the downloads appears to be a choice 1.10, I just don't know which one to download. I went to the site you mentioned in the above post but I have no clue if I have an X server, or what that is.

Is there any hope of a guy like me, w/ almost no comp skills and too old and funky to get comp skills ever playing freeciv? Is there no site I can go to that says...

X Click here to download freeciv.

Or should I wait a few more months or years till you guys get it polished?

The "click here to download" is the freeciv source; it compiles directly for unix/linux and amiga, but is not suited for windoze.
When using it for windows some changes have to be made first, which is what someone had done for the 1.9 version. Apperantly it is not done for 1.10 .

I guess that if you wanted to play it the easiest way would be to install linux first, as I said. Linux Mandrake has an install just as easy as win98 in most cases, so it is not as far-fetched as it seems.

        Thue,

Maybe we could use the Amiga version with WinUAE? I have never tried this before but it could work. If someone made an 'amiga in a box' with FreeCiv perhaps?(HD image for UAE with several programs installed)
Probably would be easier to use WinUAE than Linux as the Amiga seems to be well supported already.
Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

Freeciv use a good deal of computing power for some things; it would be way to slow to emulate.

Are you formally requesting a FC forum on Apolyton then, Thue?

If so, please contact Mark and I via email to discuss all the details about getting one going.

Quick instructions for installing FreeCiv on Windows:

              1) Go to www.starnet.com and download the demonstration version of X-Win32. Install it.

              2) Download the Windows 1.9 version of FreeCiv from http://www.freeciv.org/windows.html

              3) Start "Freeciv Server (do not announce game on metaserver)" from the start menu.

              4) Type "set aifill 5" (or however many total players (human and computer) you want). Hit "enter".

              4) Start X-Win32

              5) Start the FreeCiv client from the start menu.

              6) From the "Freeciv Server Selection" tab of the dialog box that comes up, enter the name you want to use in the "Name" field. Click the "Connect" button.

              7) Switch back to the Civserver. Type "start" and press "enter". This starts the game.

              8) X-Win32 will give you a message every half-hour or so that you will only be able to use it for a limited time. When it gives you a warning that it will quit in 15 minutes, select "Quit" from the FreeCiv "Game" menu. Click on the X-Win32 button on the taskbar and select "close". Repeat steps 4, 5, and 6. This will reconnect you to your game.

              9) Remember, the AI isn't very knowlegable about diplomacy

Thanks... I don't have windows so I am not very knowledgeable... (but what a pain with that nagware!)

Let us hope that someone has the heart to compile a laterwversion for windows. You are missing some great features in 1.9 (and bug fixes) build queues, barbarians...
Not to mention that you cannot play with the CVS, the development version.

ps: I asked them officially to make a freeciv forum. Let us see how quickly it is possible to do that

                  oh and

4.33) type "explain" to have a list of options. to "explain <option>" to have furthe information about a particular option. "set <option> <value>" will set it.

4.66) The ai defaults to easy. Type "hard" to have a challenge. The hard AI allmost doesn't cheat. (only it can see a little more of the map than you in some cases and it doesn't respect maximum tax rates).

                    KRAAAAH!!!

Nobody told me 1.10 was out...
                    Damn.

I can't see the point of making a windoze port. If your only OS is Win95/98, there is only program thing that can save you:

                    FDISK FOR DOS!

Then hurry up and get Linux, and your soul can still be saved.

                      Thue:

Is a mac version there? I can't seem to find one…

Oh sorry - my fault, there isn't. There is one labelled PowerPC, which I thought were MAC, but it is for linux on a MAC .

                          You got it!
btw: if you have linux I strongly recomment getting the latest CVS. It has tons of cool new features and bugfixes, and you will be using the cutting edge freeciv! (plus the developers get more testers :P)
Once you have seen how easy it is to change the source code there is no going back!
