  • Question on setting up a Server

Is it possible to make a huge game, with lots of players, but where players can come and go, and when not there the AI takes over?

    The Scenario:
I want to set up a server at work.
We are about 40 people, but most people will probably not play, and Never will all that plays be online.
Reason is that we are shift workers, so usually there are between 3 and 10 people on shift.

So I was thinking, it would be handy if when a player disconnects, an AI takes over on the next turn, untill he comes back online.
Unless there are no Human players, then the Server stops, playing untill for example at least X amount of players are back online again.

    Is this possible?

    Regards,
    Brian

    Hi Eldaria,

What you´re describing is possible. It´s called a Longturn Game, the timeout is set to 24h (or more). People can login anytime during that period, make their moves and logout again. Naturally you´ll need to run a freeciv server 24x7 (with autosave, just in case ) where players can log in.

The Polish Civ site hosts longturn games on a special Freeciv server with password protection for the users. Check out the forum there for more info about it.
Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

Freeciv has a maximum of 30 players total.

      This is definitely possible.
      Use the server option 'aitoggle'

Unless there are no Human players, then the Server stops, playing untill for example at least X amount of players are back online again.
I don't know if this is possible. I hope so, you wouldn't want the AIs to finish the game for you

What you want IIRC is '/set turnblock 1':

        turnblock
        Turn-blocking game play mode
If this is set to 1 the game turn is not advanced
until all players have finished their turn, including
        disconnected players.

For those who do not know about it, you can see all the options by typing '/show' and you can get help on specific options by typing '/help
