  • Freeciv - Win95 - no sound

    Just wondering if someone might have the answer to this. I am running Freeciv 1.14 on Windows 95. No problems but I have no sound. I had sound on a different workstation running Windows XP. Is it my hardware? This Windows 95 computer is a laptop.

    I tried changing default sounds to winmm in settings. Does not seem to make a difference.

    I have a good question, which client are you using, because i believe the gtk client for windows may be a little better.

      I just don't seem to be able to tell. It is version 1.14.0 for Windows, but I can't find any client information in any of the files. I am not running an X server. Maybe there is only one client that doesn't use an X server. Anyway, if you really think a different version will help, I can try that - after I finish my current game.

        I reccomend use of this client
        GtK client/server Version 1.14.1
        FREECIV for windows, GTK version, with sound
        GTK client for windows...

        Version 1.14.0

        For this version if it stops workin, all you need to do is reinstall it, and it will work again.

        A small note, if thier is no no sound, extract this file into the data directory of freeciv....

        Standard Sound set for Version 1.13.x

            I noticed that i did not mention the steps to fix it...

            step one copy the contents of the Standard Sound set into the data directory of freeciv... Then run it and try to see if the sound happens.

            Step two.... Reinstall it if it did not work, and make sure the the contents of the standard sound set is there.

              This requires the gtk runtime which may not run on Windows 95. I will try it though and answer that question for myself and others. Sorry for the use of an old operating system. I just restored my laptop with the retore CD which is far easier than a new installation. I may need to go to Windows 98 to accomplish everything I want to accomplish.

                I do not know about the GTK client on windows, but if you go to linux, I recommend the program Wine, at www.Winehq.org. if you want a cheap upgrade.

                  So close! I got sound, but the client freezes after the game is started. This is motivating me to try other X windows based freeciv versions. No problem in linux - but I am a little afraid to put that on my laptop. Thanks for your help so far. I will let everyone know if I discover a way to make this work well in Windows 95. At this point it is a challenge.

                    No worry... I reccommend Debian, but you will need to learn a little about the command line, and that is not hard, but just a little time consuming.

                    I got the sound to work in two steps...

                    Step one- Extract the Freeciv client to a directory, like C:\FreeCIV\

                    Step 2- If you used the example, Extract the sound file to...
                    C:\FreeCIV\DATA\

                    My free Civ Client is this Windows Version , and the sound file is the one in this directory...

                      Success at last. Here is the answer. Your download files are the ones to use, but I had to resolve some problems as well. I installed Freeciv 1.14.1 no problem. Then I got the standard sounds file you suggest. The first problem is that this is a .tar file. I didn't have Winzip, only a utility for .zip files. Secondly, the soundspec files and all the sounds are together and extracted to one directory. But the soundspec file indicates that the sound files are in a subdirectory called stdsounds. I had to create that directory under /data and move the sounds to it. The soundspec file stays in /data in the freeciv directory. Finally I changed default sound plugin to winmm in the local options and saved the settings. I don't know if this last step is necessary.
