  • freeciv with a "heightmap"

Hi all, I'm working on a new tileset for Freeciv. It's based on a "heightmap", like in Transport Tycoon. However, it requires some changes to client rendering, and as you can see from the screenshot there are some graphic glitches currently. Am I too late to get the required rendering changes included before 1.15 is released? Feedback? Improvements? Is this project worth pursuing further?

    Here's a screenshot:

This is the first time I've seen the heightmap in action. It looks pretty nifty! You should ask about this at freeciv-dev or freeciv-dev as well.
Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

This looks pretty interesting. Have you made the heights actually mean anything, or do they just look pretty?
Whether it gets accepted depends on how intrusive it is, how many people like it, how well it works, and various other factors. I'm sure that at least FreecivAC, http://freecivac.sourceforge.net/, is interested, as SMAC has a height system too.

The height is currently a function of the distance to water. It doesn't affect gameplay rules, since it's a client side patch. What game rules should it affect, i.e. replace or interact better with mountain/hills tiles?

        How does height affect FreeAC?

Heightmap is a good idea. Terrain looks more realistic. But on random places of the island should be random height (and not function of distance to water). It should also havesame various factors for example higher terrain shuld require more time to transfer it to ocean, defence bonus,...

You should probably have the area around mountains and hills be higher than other areas. This is important for FreeAC because SMAC also includes height levels (although heights actually matter for things like solar collectors, so the server would need to be modified for that).

Looks pretty good. Will be interesting to see how this turns out.
