  • "CVS" and "GTK-client"?

I'm quite a noob at playing this, i've only played Civ 3 before. But i've noticed that many ppl are talking about "CVS" and "GTK" clients, what are they?

CVS (Concurrent Versions System) is a version control system. It is used to to keep track of modifications to source code, documentation or other project files. When someone refer to a CVS client they are probably talking about the newest version of the client source code.

GTK+ is a multi-platform toolkit for creating graphical user interfaces, and is what is used to create freecivs GUI (among others).
We are the apt, you will be packaged.

Freeciv has several different clients. These are: win32 native, gtk1, gtk2, xaw, mui (amiga) and sdl. The win32 native, gtk2 and sdl clients work on Windows, while gtk1 and xaw only work on Unix. The gtk2 client (commonly refered to merely as 'gtk') has more features and is more updated than the native win32 one.

Freeciv develoment happens on two 'branches' as of the moment: Continued development on 1.14 versions, mostly bugfixes. This leads to the 1.14.1 release, which will be compatible with 1.14.0. The other is CVS HEAD, which is where all the fancy new features are added, is incompatible with 1.14.0 and will likely become 1.15.0 later on.

      Hope this helps :-)
