    Hey Gary:

I didn't even know railways and canals were In the code in the first place! If so they must have been something Joe put in. We certainly don't need canals for the next few demos, I thought you would know I was speaking in the longer term.

No, I put them in the terrain effects code yesterday. It seemed like a good idea at the time. The slot is there when we need it.

Check out my post in the Terrain thread.

It is 4.30 am, and I can't sleep for the excitement...

      Cheers

I would stick with rivers on the edge of the hexes. Seems much more natural. To me rivers are natural trade routes since they allow large amounts of goods to be transported relatively easy, at least in the early stages of civilization building.

And I think ships should not be allowed to move up the river.
Some do in real life, but are they not mostly trade ships?
I have the impression that most military units that were using rivers are small and more tactical in aspect (gunboats, patrolcraft), which probably could not have much impact on a strategic situation. And are these smaller gunboats worth picturing?

If we were to allow ships up the river, how realistic would it be to have a large navy sailing up & down a large?
Can you imagine a carrier strike group sailing up the Mississipi?
        Or a large modern battleship?
They would be sitting ducks to air attack or artillery attack, with no possibility to manouver. Or a tank charge for that matter

If we were to allow ships or TFs to sail rivers, there would have to be huge penalties and restrictions.

I don't think any admiral with some sanity would send his big ships fleet into such restricted waters,

Ships are now definitely banned from rivers. This gives me a truly enormous sense of relief. Ships in land squares will be (and have been) discussed in the ships and movement/boarding thread

I feel that this thread has now (finally) served its purpose. Rivers will be on the edge of suares and ships will not be allowed on them

          Cheers

I still think for the long-term we should go for the polygonal river system that would allow viking like ships to invade inland, but not huge merchantmen

Oh dear! Are you even sure you answered the questions correctly?) Underneath your confused exterior, you hold fast to your certainties and seek to find the truth about the things you don't know. While you may not be brimming with confidence and energy, you are content with who you are and accepting of both your faults and the faults of others. But while those around you love you deep down, they may find your nonchalance somewhat infuriating. Try to put a bit more thought into what you are doing, and be more aware of your surroundings.
