Feel free to post any questions, comments or even criticisms.

By way of introduction let me tell you that this is my first stab at SMAC fiction, more than three years after all the fun started. I haven't read any of the fiction here other than a little bit by Googlie and Alinestra, so forgive me if I am covering any old ground.

This story should be an ongoing one, with many future installments to come.

    Pretty good, but...
We alone have insisted that, while complete freedom in love and marriage is allowed, there must be state control of the conception of children.
Somehow I never thought of Deirdre as caring much about genetic breeding.

I disagree, I could easily see Deirdre being like that. Did you read the part in Dragon Sun where they talk about how her people live in caves while she has a spacious room with a view at the top of the tower? One common interpretation of Deirdre is as a hypocrite who talks egalitarianism and brotherhood while using (Planetlife oriented) violence and repression against any who disagree with her radical green agenda.

Besides, if she's not an elitist, why does she call herself "Lady"?

Er . . . Anyway, I like the story a lot. I didn't see that bit at the end coming!
Everything changes, but nothing is truly lost.

Which part of Dragon Sun is this? The closest thing I can think of is where she complains about Simper liking Morganite luxury, and he then replies that she lives pretty luxuriously herself.

Besides, if she's not an elitist, why does she call herself "Lady"?
IIRC, Morgan gave her that title in Journey to Centauri.

I think that's just cause she behaves that way in the game .

            RF:

Good start - and am looking forward to more.

Different twist - sort of an Alpha Centauri Rip van Winkle, eh?

Hey, RedFred's putting his own fanfic online! Cool!

So far, it's good, solid stuff - I like the idea of a pod-pop that results in the discovery of a few extra citizens to add to your faction! (A pity something like this wasn't included in the real game, it would have made early pod popping even more irresistible...)

Looks like I share Major Martin Major's taste in "old fashioned 2D holovids" - I sincerely hope that Flight Lieutenant Lionel Mandrake and Sergeant Bat Guano can find their way into the story somehow!

I'm also impressed by the fact that so far we haven't seen any of the usual, somewhat belabored personalities of the faction leaders. Personally, I like to see them from a respectful distance for as long as possible, and so far this story is doing perfectly well with the (far more interesting) "little people".

Keep it up, and I'll be back for more!

I wasn't going to read your story Red, I read the first couple of lines thinking "dont like the style" but something caught me on it and i read till the end despite myself. (Thats supposed to be a compliment )

I too prefer the tales from the "little people"s angle. Keep it up.
