PART-1 THE HARBRINGERS OF DOOM
Somewhere in the Drakensburg Mountains

Sergeant Delorean cursed himself for the umpteenth time. “Why the hell did I get stuck in this mess?” he asked himself. Delorean was the captain of a small group of soldiers of the UN stationed in a research facility in the remote Drakensburg mountain range in South Africa. They were not told exactly what they were guarding but Delorean privately believed it was whatever that was hidden and kept safe in the underground top security vaults. Right now they were under attack by a mysterious band of attackers. The local militias and the rogue tribal soldiers wouldn’t attempt to attack the facility since they didn’t have the necessary weaponry or the motive to attack it. No one knew what was being stored in the underground vaults. But then again these mysterious assailants had yet assaulted the building. The attack began after sundown. Two large and shadowy figures walked right up to the main entrance of the building and started chucking concussion grenades at the gates. In a few minutes, the gates were destroyed. The garrison was quick to respond and the only two range rovers they possessed moved out and began attacking and dealt retaliatory fire to the assailants. To the driver’s and the soldier’s amazement who was manning the roof mounted machine guns, the bullets had no apparent effect on the two at least a whopping 12-feet tall attackers.
Jack Leopard gave a sinister chuckle as he gave the command to his second-in-command, Sonic, to begin phase-2 of the operation. The first phase had gone like clockwork. The two robots, Armageddon and Ajax, were taking care of the frontal assault. They were the robots of the Sahara Burst Wars generation created by Jack himself. They were definitely far ahead of their time. Quasi sentient killing machines who had enough intelligence to carry out all their orders to the letter with a certain degree of autonomy and ‘dark’ creativity but not developed enough to judge between right and wrong and being far more powerful and devastating than normal human soldiers made them the most feared war machines of that era. But that blasted UN and its humanitarian namby-pamby saw to it that all of them were disbanded after the war when they dealt severe casualties and damage to the opposing armies without a shred of remorse. But these two were different. They were the last two functioning units of that glorious army of robots. Jack knew that the frontal assault was only a distraction but he knew they might as well make the diversion a success. Phase-2 began just as Sonic activated the virus and breached the facilities’ security systems. Then the fun began.
Delorean was furious. The two assailants’ bodies’ proved to be invulnerable to gunfire and soon the rovers and their unfortunate occupants were ‘terminated’. Just then one of the young techies informed Delorean that the internal security systems had been breached. “****”, said Delorean. Suddenly it became clear to him what was going on. The direct attack was a diversion. The real opponent was somewhere else. Delorean ordered his best men and his deputy DeWayne to follow him and get to the source of the virus. The techie told an external port had been used to hack the system and the source port was connected to the terminal in the underground vaults. “So that’s it, they were after whatever was hidden in the vaults”, thought Delorean aloud. Suddenly the lights in the corridor through which his men were travelling flickered and closed. “They got the electric systems too!” exclaimed Delorean.
The moment the lights went out Sonic coolly walked out into the corridor, activated his infrared night vision goggles and drew out his shredder pistol and began firing at the hapless soldiers. Instantly at least eight bodies fell to the ground, dead. Delorean rolled towards the area where a little light was falling. With the help of that light he could see the attacker. Delorean quietly drew out his gun equipped with silencer and took aim and fired. To his amazement the attacker somehow heard the shot and wheeled around and ducked just in time to dodge the bullet. His timing was perfect. The next thing Delorean knew a punch on his face broke his nose and caused him to land at least four feet away. He was flabbergasted by the speed of the attack. His assailant had punched him in the face within a second even when Delorean was a good eight feet away from him. Delorean staggered to his feet and dove towards his attacker only to realize that in an instant his attacker was positioned behind him and surprisingly moved away and disappeared just as the lights in the corridor in which they were came back on and the neighboring corridor’s lights went off. Delorean turned to see that half his men were lying dead. “Damn it”, he shouted. “We must keep moving towards the vaults”, he ordered. They kept moving. Meanwhile in the above levels Delorean heard several explosions omens of disaster? Delorean reached the vault doors after losing all his men to another attack where a large armored attacker fought them with a laser rifle. He wore Nichrome armor. The alloy of nichrome was legendary since it was impenetrable by everything except artillery shells and DEWs or Direct Energy Weapons in other words lasers, electro-bombs and the like. That fellow was armed with both nichrome and DEW. Nichrome production had stopped long ago. That armor could well be an antique piece but nichrome never rusted and its resistance to destruction and its ability to withstand being broken rivaled that of diamond and it was incredibly light and comfortable to wear as armor and did not impede movement. That armored ‘knight’, if he could be called that, had taken out most of Delorean’s remaining force except one soldier and his trusted deputy, DeWayne. They reached the underground entrance to the vault. It appeared abandoned at first glance. But then all of a sudden a man appeared behind DeWayne and a retractable blade sprung out of his hand and impaled DeWayne right through his torso instantaneously killing him. The other functionary tried to fore at the assailant but the red haired devil of an attacker in blink of an eye was behind the soldier and in flash drew out a shredder pistol and fired. In a short burst of fire the soldier’s upper body was literally splattered across the opposite wall. Then the man turned around. Delorean was struck by his age. He was not a man but maybe a boy of only seventeen or eighteen years of age. He did justice to the saying of the ‘handsome devil’. His hair was all red and his face was extremely handsome with sharp features but it was his eyes that Delorean was marveling at. They were a disconcerting red in color. They were by no means bloodshot but they were red and cold. There was simply no emotion in them. His expression seemed to convey an experience and understanding and evil beyond his age. This was Jack Leopard. Suddenly Delorean dropped to the ground. There was no pain but he knew he was dying. He could have been hit by a laser from behind.
“What did you find?” asked Sonic. “It is of great interest. All our future woes and problems have been solved”, said Jack. “Are we still proceeding with the Unity phase?” asked Hydron. “Yes”, replied Jack coldly. They loaded the stolen cargo into the truck and quickly drove off. With the upcoming launch of the UNS Unity the next day no one would come to know of the theft until after the launch of the space craft. The launch site wasn’t very far from where they were at the moment. By then Jack and his cohorts would be a long way gone for Chiron with whatever dark secrets they had uncovered and whatever dark intentions they had.
