    Part 1

Dorian saw the sunrise, the 1st sun rise, the 2nd sun of Planet would be up to, but not for a while. For now though, Dorian just enjoyed the first one, turning the darkness around him slowly, yet somewhat delicately into a sight of color and life. The green and orange fields of the nutrient farms were first, followed by the many rows of blue tinted solar panels fields up in the hills behind him. Off in the distance, the Xenofungus’s crimson brilliance was revealed, with the early warning systems grey antenna towers poking up against it, human brilliance of technology standing guard against the alien nature of Planet.

From his observation tower high above the Base, Dorian remarked on how his position made him as a god and man. From his watch-post, he could oversee much of the surrounding area for miles, he could follow the mag-lev lines as they lead to other centers of humanity and could observe the yellow Formers tending to the maintenance of the deep and foreboding Boreholes. Yet at the same time, he was awestruck by how he was watching a hundred, a thousand, a million things beyond his control operate without him ever fully comprehending how and why there were happening. He saw the Supply Crawlers return with minerals from the resource patch from the south of the continent, where the Faction had yet to fully expand and control. What was going to happen to those minerals? Would they go for someone’s bed? For a fusion rifle? For a hover tank? He could not say, such components of the Grand Plan were beyond anything he could, or should, understand.

And then the klaxon sounded. Dorian’s shift was over. His watchtower post that extended far and high above the base was part of a larger, pulley inspired system, his platform began to lower itself while the watchman for the next shift had his platform rise. They passed at mid point without looking at each other. Dorian’s platform reached the bottom. He stepped out and walked to the second elevator to bring him down into the base and its depths. The door to the passageway to the elevator closed behind him, and he was once again, as he had been every time before, overwhelmed. Overwhelmed by the deep blue hue of the base, the motif of the Ying-Yang symbol that dominated every spot the eye could see, and the general sense of ill ease as he felt his mind being limited, as his neural implants began reconnecting to the Central Data Core, as his mind began to wonder away from his earlier thoughts, wander in a guided manner back to…

D-847 felt good to be back in The Hive. He was glad that the earlier feelings of discomfort that he felt, and for that matter usually felt, after returning from watch-duty had subsided. He was not sure quite why he felt uneasy when he got off the Platform and into the base, but thankfully that would not be a concern for his to think about, for the time being. The immediate concerns were being transmitted to him, to assist in the overseeing the development of a new Hover Tank model that hopefully would be part of a larger division in the near future that can be raised for the continuing campaign against both the Gaian Mind Worm army and the larger, more dangerous, Gaian Faction.
