  • PBEM dialog posts from Hydro

    Hi all,

I just got a PM from Marid Audran. He asked that I poke around and finish posting my various PBEM dialogs, and finish those I have shamefully neglected. As of right now there are 14 PBEMs I’m party to. Of these about 2 were stillborn and 2 are still in progress. I’m fairly certain I’ve only posted about half of the completed PBEM dialogs. I’ll have to check, but I think that most of the completed PBEM dialogs are in decent shape, although a few are incomplete due to my incompetence in promptly pulling the dialog out of e-mails.

The main problem holding me back is the pain-and-agony factor in posting very long documents, and I hope we can come up with some ideas on how to post without forcing me to have 50 or so posts - ack! Most of the PBEM dialogs are Word documents that are 1MB to 3MB and 400+ pages long, and some are much more. This level of magnitude qualifies as a royal pain in the hind quarters. Perhaps a PDF with a link to a Word document might work. I am open to suggestions.

Another option is to snip vignettes from these large documents like I did earlier this year and post as short stories in the Fiction section of SMAC here at Apolyton. Some of the vignettes (such as The Hallway) were quite pithy. Any thoughts on which are better - longer dialogs or vignettes?

    Hydro,

I think that it'd be most efficient to simply upload the document in a single post as an attachment; no fuss, no multiple postings, no agony. We could simply download the .doc and open/read it at our leisure.

For those Microsoft Word-less there is a freeware program called Abiword which replicates the word processing component of Word lock, stock, and barrel, and has no problem opening Word documents.

I think you'll agree Hydro this is a feasible solution!

      MA and friends,

OK. When I get back from holiday in early January I'll do an inventory. I think that PDF might be the best option, but I may have to experiment a bit to see how it looks. There will be artifacts of web posting (eg - "[ i ] ", etc) that I may have to spend some time editing out.

In fact, perhaps it is time to get really organized and look over all the PBEM dialogs. I'm sure the vaunted Illuminatus would consent to helping provide links in his SMAC fiction compendium.
