  • Has anyone done a story on...

... the premise that the Voice of the Planet SP fails miserably and the Flowering of Planet occurs? I just came up with this idea, but before I toy with it any further I'd like to find out if anyone's already done it and if so, in what manner. I hate to use identical premises with another story, I invariably end up subconsciously either writing something that's completely opposite or practically identical.

I don't recall any stories with that theme (and I've been kicking around since 1999), but it is an interesting idea. In fact, it is a very good idea for SMAC II, the premise being that we botched the Upload, Planet flowered and it killed most higher life forms - except for a few that escaped into space (for instance) in near orbit, who awaken...

I half-finished a story about this, where SP is sabotaged and Flowering kills off all but a colony ship directed towards Manifold One. It was during time I toyed with idea of a modification. I did not publish it however.

I'll start tinkering further with the idea, then. I've always had a thing for the apocalyptic, and haven't written anything for the sheer heck of it for ages.

SMAC needs cheerier stories...Maybe something like miram, yang, and the 5 new human factions (who are 1. gaians who are bloody driven mad by miram's ecological destruction 2. talents who come together in a colony pod to seek shelter from discriminatio 3. believers from the probe team division of miriam's army who grow tired of miriam's mind control, and set out to deprogram the world with intellectual and virtual freedom 4. ppl from morgan minerals who revolt and overthrow the oppressors who escape to the last continent, and an anarchist black-market-driven merchant guild who distruct the politics of the world, and just want to live happy lives.

The talents are the cybernetic consciousness, the morgan minerals revolts are the free drones, the surviving gaians (they mentioned a lone base safe from the chaos) become the cult of planet, the decentralized probe-team operatives are the data angels, who mind-control their first base (but they're too decentralized to really need bases), and the black market merchant guild are the nautilus pirates.

Mia still could rule the Hive, but Miram's followers are led by priests who debate all day about her writings and her actions while she was on earth (she's kind of like the new jesus or muhammed), and they enforce it on their devout population.

Plot: 50-100 years after the twilight of the mind. Talents have been disappearing all over the world. Domai, the drone leader, is busy juggling combat with the cultists, who have been fighting him for every fungus-infested inch of the last continent, and Aki-Zeta-5's (whom he behind the political scene suspects to be behind it.But it turns out it is the the hive, believers, and the cultists.

Cultist, hive, and beleiver scientists get together and try and trigger the flowering, but it doesn't work, the manifold's already been tainted. Zakharov, Deidre, Santiago, and Morgan have found a ruse, and entered the plant as Deidre did a long time ago with the virtual world and the empath chair; they're immortal now. Their personalities became the fullfront of planet...resiprosity, security, greed, power, but also pacifism, respect for life and beauty, and a dazzling interest in the universe and its inhabitents (Zakharov being the first to merge with planet, is the strongest), that's why the mindworm slaughters of the people quieted down drasticaly; planet wants to se where scientific progress took the universe.

Pirates and angels raid the secret project hq, and the hack it planet, causing it to assimilate the minds of all who enter the noosphere from then on. Ah, peace!

The mindworms are the SMAC equivelent of Civ's barbarians. You don't like the barbarians in Civ either?

Mindworms also behave as a trump card to complete a superiority loop.

                13-6-1 > 1-1-1,

                MW > 24-12-1.

I love the mindworm.....or at least that is what the mind worm burrowing in my brain case tells me to say.

i like the barbs in civ-i DO have loose worms, but psi attacks and player created mind worms are off-not because they kill bases, but bcause they are poorly done.for example, when i get enough facilities to build demon locusts in 2 turns(genejacks etc) and dream twister i just crank em out by the zillion and win quickly...

even when getting odds of 8 vs 9\10 (not my favour) vs trance+AAA elite units almost every fight wins with at least 1 hp

maybe my game is corrupted somehow, but they can blow through anything.the other PSI units suck.i have been looking at the creation forum and saw some nice ideas on boosting them, and planning to do that sometime
