  • Free Drone Landing

    Prologue

The probes moved quickly through the shadows of Free Drone Central. Patrols were not common, and they were sure that no one spotted them. Gaining entry into a local datalinks node through a waste removal tube, the Data Angels hooked up their equipment and began to scan the memory of the datalinks for anything useful.

“Hmmm… backward Drones. Nothing worth stealing. But maybe they’re hiding something. Let’s take a look.” Datajack Katt mumbled to her partner as they began the scan.

“We can always steal the maps if they don’t have anything for us. But quiet. Let’s get to work.” Datajack Roberts replied as the code flew by on his MMI.

Almost five minutes passed in fruitless silence as old technology passed them. Roberts began to look for the map files when Katt spoke up.

“Hold up Roberts. I found something large here. Wonder what it is.”

Roberts looked over at Katt’s discovery, “Too small to be tech files. Forget about it.”

“I don’t know… Roze will be upset if we come back with just maps. I want to take this.”

Roberts shrugged, “I have the maps. Do what you will.”

“Fine fine. Just let me disconnect and I’ll be gone. Go prepare the exit.” Katt said, with defeat in her voice.

Roberts left, and Katt slipped her datachip into the links. A few seconds later, she pulled it back out, smiling to her self. She reset the datalinks menu and hurried to catch up with Roberts.

    ************

Roze had indeed not been happy with the lack of new technology. But she blamed the Drones for their backwards methods and not the probes. Katt and Roberts were dismissed.

As soon as she was sure her room was secure, Katt popped the disk into her MMI and took a look at what she had found…

Sorry I haven’t been able to talk to you guys lately, but you know how my job is. Anyway, Free Drone Central is finally up and running, so I can afford to write in this datalinks entry more often.

Whew! What a year, huh guys? After that Unity crisis, I hoped we would find some peace on Planet. But all we found was work ahead of us. I can’t believe our landing pod landed ON TOP of that Unity resuply pod. What luck. And who could forget Irving’s face when he was trying to figure out how we were going to get the prefabricated Unity Foil over three miles from the pod to the coast! That one took him almost a week!

Of course, his answer was ingenious. We should be thanking our stars that the UN had enough since to put treads on some of the more heavy equipment. A few modifications and we had ourselves a platform large enough to move the Unity Foil. Simply amazing, even if the thing broke down every 500 feet or so. Anyone for some sailing?

I was talking to Maxwell a few days ago. The results of his scouting sweep around the base are in. To the southeast of us is some sort of desert with very heavy sand. They’re still trying to figure out what is in it. And to the north, they found an abandoned Unity Pod. Inside was a transmitter, and, by following it, they found a scanning robot that had located some very rich plants. According to the reports, this sector alone could feed 15000 people right now! Free Drone Central is looking into harvesting the area to give our citizens enough to eat for generations.

The team is trying to get that robot pod to continue searching, but it doesn’t look like it will happen. Apparently, these things are programmed only to search the area of the pod for one nutrient area, and then shut down. That seems very wasteful. But there are tons of pods out there, and we may find some more robots inside.

Well, my secretary is mumbling something about a meeting that started five minutes ago, so I’ll have to end this. I already sent you two the account and password for our ‘Datalink notebook’, so feel free to type anything here. Even if we can’t meet, we can still remember the old times.

    Bye! Reply!!

Katt paused. What was this thing? That sure didn’t sound like the Domai she’d heard in the holo meetings. This Domai seemed to open up to whoever ‘Maxwell’ and ‘Irving’ were. Could this have been what Domai had been like all those years ago?

Katt immediately realized the significance of what she had found. She had a copy of the diary between the Free Drone leader and some of his closest friends. She had a chance to see the Domai behind the cameras, behind the holovids, behind everyone, and where he was most comfortable.

Not wasting another minute, she scanned the file for another interesting entry…

Testing? Testing? OK. If you two can read this, that means that the Drilling Grounds transmitter has finally been installed correctly. So this would be the first official message sent out from the base, although only you will be able to read it. Lucky guys huh?

If you thought Free Drone Central was bad in the early years, you haven’t seen ANYTHING yet! Although my team was more prepared then we were after landing, you have no idea what the soil is like out here. It resists our every touch. My team believes that it is because of all the Uranium in the area. These so called ‘Uranium Flats’ will no doubt be useful when we get around to harvesting our minerals, but it is making it hell to dig.

This red fungus isn’t much help either. Can someone at home get to work on figuring out what this stuff IS? It’s starting to scare some of the crew. They swear it is moving. I think they’re a bit stressed from building the habitation area. But at least we’ve finally got the base atmosphere synthesizers running. Now we can get rid of these cursed breath suits.

Anyway, I have some interesting reports here. Remember, you didn’t hear this from me, and it might not be even true, but I think we’re on a small island. Judging by the topography of the area I am in, and reflecting it over the axis with Free Drone Central in the center, we could fit (at maximum) five settlements in this area. Of course, there could be a land bridge somewhere on the other end, but I doubt it.

I’ve got a small lab here, and I’m going to start research on the ecology of the area. You should do the same. If we compare data, we should be able to figure out how our Earth plants will survive if we plant farms. I’m hoping we could get some ‘terrachurners’ out there. We’ll work on the name later.

Ok. That’s my entry. I’ll give you more later.
