    In the middle of war

Something was wrong. A careful observer might notice that the cyborg students seemed slightly slower than usual. Not much, maybe only a half a second, but still. It was almost as if the Consciousness was preoccupied or worried about something. Everything appeared perfectly normal. The campus of Alpha Prime University of Sciences and Arts was like most other Cyborg Universities. Students roamed the paths leading to and away from classes. The cyborg students were easily recognizable with their cybernetic implants that connected them altogether and to the Consciousness in an invisible web. They could instantly access information about homework assignments, tests, and send messages to each other with just a thought. This put students from other factions at a great disadvantage. They had to study the old fashion way. And, the two groups did not mingle very much. Cyborgs saw themselves as superior, and the other students – derogatorily called Outsiders - were frankly a little scared at these cyborg “things”.
One of these “Outsiders” was Rick, born in 2370 at Drone Paradise, his parents scrapped all the credits they could find to send their son to a good school. They wanted him to have the education that would give him a chance in life. Rick was a smart kid, and they knew he could be somebody if given a helping hand. They missed him, now that he was away from home, but that was the price to pay. Rick had just left his pre-sentient algorithms class, which he found very interesting, and was now walking toward his history class on the Believer-Cult war of 2207. The class was a real bore, the professor always talked about how the other factions were inferior because they were not logical like the Wonderful Consciousness. It did not matter; he got to sit next to “Alicia”. Her real name was C-22J but he liked to call her Alicia. She was a cyborg, but she was nice to him, and she was so pretty. There she was.
    “Hi Alicia”
“Rick (pause) hello, are you functioning properly?”
“Uh, Yeah, I’m doin’ fine. Thanks.”
The hologram of the professor appeared, and began the lecture:
“In the year 2206, tensions were already high between the Believers and the Cult of Planet. Both factions claimed to have a religious purpose on Planet. Cha Dawn believed he was Planet’s prophet. Miriam considered him to be a false prophet and desired to free his followers from what she viewed as a cult. There were many military skirmishes during the second half of 2206, because neither had any respect for the other. In early 2207, a Cult recon rover on an exploration mission found the Manifold Nexus. It was in neutral territory so the Cult sent a colony pod to claim it. Do you know what happened next?”
A cyborg student raised their hands to answer:
“The Believers got their first. They settled the area around the Nexus, with a new base called Shining City.”
“Correct. When the Cult expedition got to the Manifold Nexus, they found Shining City in the process of construction. Cha Dawn was furious. Two weeks later he dispatched an army composed of mindworms and impact rovers to seize Shining City. The Cult seized the base but Miriam pronounced vendetta and a 4-year war between those two factions began which only ended after Lal intervened.
Students, this is a prime example of the destructive nature of left brain thinking. Desires inevitably lead to conflict. Both the Believers and the Cult desired the same thing, so they fought and destroyed each other for 4 years. Desire is irrational. We cyborgs are superior to the other factions because we are rational and logical. We do not let emotions control our decisions like Cha Dawn did when he found out that the Believers got to the Nexus first…”
A loud explosion rocked the auditorium

ALERT … ALERT … ALPHA PRIME UNDER ATTACK … CLASS IS CANCELLED … PROCEED TO NEAREST NETWORK NODE FOR INSTRUCTION

“What exactly is going on, Alicia?”
Alicia linked with the main database through her MMI to find out more about the attack in progress.
“Alpha Prime is under surprise attack by unknown forces. Drop pods everywhere. Flechette defense has destroyed 20% of incoming forces but they are overwhelming us.”
“Come Alicia with me, I will get you to safety.”
“Negative. I must proceed to network node”
Rick could see the drop pods descending unto Alpha Prime. He could also see the flashes of tachyon bolts rising to meet the descending threat, from the cyborg air defenses. The explosions were deafening. Needlejets streaked in a few moments earlier and had begun to bombard the Cyborg base mercilessly. With all the chaos of battle, the cyborg soldiers seemed unaffected. They marched in perfect order, not even stopping when one fell never to rise again.
… I almost wish I were like them not knowing what fear is…
Then Rick saw Alicia fall to the ground. He ran toward her. She was wounded from a piece of metal that had blown off a building from one of the explosions. He picked her up. She was not dead, just hurt. He took her down into a basement where he liked to hang out between classes. He hoped it was a safe place. Then he heard a rumble. He carefully let Alicia down unto the couch and went to the window to see what it was. A cloaked rover materialized two blocks down the road and rumbled toward their position. Spartans.
… He should have known. Drop pods, needlejets, and now, cloaked rovers, all in perfect timing and coordination. Only the Spartans could pull off a military plan so well…
“Why are you shaking?” Asked Alicia.
    “I am afraid.”
    “What is fear?”
“It is an emotion that we humans have. When we are uncertain about what will happened to us.”
    “ I am human”
“I did not mean it that way. But you are different. You are half machine. You don’t know what fear is or love or anything.”
    “What is love?”
“Well, it is complicated. When a boy meets a nice girl, he will often do things for her, to impress her, because he likes her.”
Rick took her hand in his and held it tight.
…She would never understand, would she? She would never see what he felt for her. I guess I don’t want to be a cyborg after all. They sacrifice emotion in exchange for pure logic. Don’t they see that without feelings and emotions good and bad, we are not really human anymore?
At that moment, the door slammed open and a tall, strong man in a black uniform, with a shredder pistol in his hand, entered. Two men followed behind him. The Spartan soldiers grabbed Alicia and Rick and took them outside.
“Take this ‘borg to the punishment sphere. The kid’s with me.” The Spartan officer ordered. As Alicia was taken away, she turned to look one last time at Rick.
    “Rick, are we … friends?”
    Choked in tears, Rick whispered:
    “Always.”

I would love to hear any comments.

All I have to say is MORE, MORE. That was extremly good. I want to see what happens ? You kind of helped put the Cyborgs in a bit more perspective.

Very nice work there. I can understand why you made this a 'short story', since it doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

Still, I wouldn't mind reading some more of that. Ah well...

I am glad that you like it. Thanks. I said that it was a short story because originally It was going to be it. But with the feedback, I will continue the story. To give you all a taste of what is to come: next episode will continue with what happens to Rick and, Lal will decide how to react to the Spartan aggression.

                Chapter 2: Decisions , decisions.

It would be a busy day for Pravin Lal. His secretary of war was sitting at his desk and had just finished briefing him on the Spartan aggression against the Cybernetic faction.
“There is worse. After taking the base, the Spartans evacuated all the non-cyborg citizens and obliterated Alpha Prime killing the entire cyborg population, over 2 millions souls.” The war secretary added in a somber voice.
One advantage about being the Planetary Governor was that you had infiltrators in every faction, so you knew you would have reliable and up-to-date info on anything that happened on Chiron. But this. Lal was shocked. Not just the Spartans had just started a war of aggression with no apparent provocation, but they purposefully committed a terrible atrocity. 2 million innocent people. Lal just could not shake that number from his head. He pushed the commlink for Prime Function Aki-Zeta 5.
“Greetings Prime Function Aki-Zeta 5. I have just received a report that the Spartans have brutally attacked and massacred all your people at Alpha Prime. On behalf of all my people and myself, I wish to communicate my sincerest condolences. If there is anything that I can do for you.”
“Thank you, Planetary governor Pravin Lal. The Consciousness estimates that the Spartan attack has reduced our military ability by 20.28454%. We will recover, and we will overcome the Spartans. But there is something that you must do.”
                “What is it?” inquired Lal.
“The Consciousness requests that the Peacekeepers immediately declare vendetta on the Spartans. If you fight the Spartans, our probability of success will increase by 15.3492%.”
“I understand, but I would like to examine other options before I commit myself to a vendetta. If possible I want to end this crisis without any further bloodshed.”
“Your humanitarian concern is misplaced, Pravin Lal. Appeasing the Spartans will fail. We must resist them together.”
“Let me try to talk with Santiago. I will get in touch with you shortly. Lal out.”
Next, Lal hit the button for Santiago. Could he really convince Santiago to halt her madness? A few seconds later she appeared on the holoscreen.
“Greetings Colonel Santiago. This is Planetary Governor Pravin Lal.”
“Greetings Lal, what is the reason for this call?”
“My infiltrators in cyborg territory have just informed me that your forces have committed a major atrocity in violation of the UN Charter. I would like an explanation.”
“ I have committed no atrocity!”
“You deny that you massacred the residents of Alpha Prime?”
“It is not an atrocity to massacre machines, is it? Those cyborgs are polluting humanity. They deny individual will and thought. Furthermore, they implant chips and implants into the human body perverting it into a machine. The great Spartan Federation will no longer tolerate this!”
“Your explanation is completely unacceptable. I must insist that you withdraw your forces from cybernetic territory and sign an immediate truce with Prime Function Aki-Zeta 5.”
“Sorry, Lal, I will not do that. Good bye.”
I need to convene an emergency meeting of the Council, Lal thought. If Santiago won’t talk, then I must take some kind of action. I will get the other factions to pass trade sanctions on the Spartans. Then, Lal turned to his war secretary:
“What do you think of the whole situation?”
“I think Aki Zeta 5 is right. The Spartans will not back down. You can impose trade sanctions, but it will not solve the problem. War is inevitable, Mr. President.”
Lal turned his chair to look out of the window, as if he had not heard what his advisor had just said. The double stars of Alpha centauri were setting. The sight was beautiful, yet so ominous.
                “I fear you are correct.”

                ---------------------------------------------

The Spartan convoy had been on the road for days. It carried over 1000 non-cyborg former residents of Alpha Prime to an unknown destination. Rick was one of them. He sat in the back of the transport pod, wondering what would happen to him. He looked up, and recognized the face that was staring at him. It was his classmate John Marquinez. John was born a year after Rick, in Morgan Enterprise. His parents were fairly wealthy, so sending him to APU had not been a problem. John was eager to get his degree in Business. He wanted to start his own company in Alpha Prime, buying MMI implants from the cyborgs and exporting them to other factions. He was sure he could make a mint. Now, it did not look like that would happen.
“Hey Rick, are you ok? How did they treat you?” John asked.
“It could have been worse. I am not hurt. But those Spartans definitely need to learn some manners. Where are they taking us?”
“I don’t know but I don’t intend to stick around and find out.”
“You want to escape? Are you nuts? We are in a moving rover transport, with Spartan guards and all. There is no way we can escape.”
“I am just saying that if the opportunity arises, I’ll seize it. Are you with me or not?”
Rick did not want to stay a Spartan prisoner of war either, but he was not as bold as John was, that was for sure.”
“Yeah I’m with you, John.” Rick whispered.
The convoy made a turn to the left to avoid getting too close to a nearby fungus patch. Mindworms would definitely ruin the day.
Zen Lu could feel the presence of the mindworms. He was from the Cult of Planet faction. He was separated from birth from his parents, and sent to a temple of sorts. His master told him he was special, that his calling was to serve Planet. So, for the next 20 years of his life, he learned the ways of Planet. He learned discipline of thought. His master always told him, “Focus, always focus: your will must be so strong it can overcome anything". Now, Zen Lu had surpassed his master. He was his own master. And now, he would control the mindworms to escape. He would show the Spartans that there was a more powerful force than brute military strength. Zen went into his meditative state, legs crossed, arms stretched out. Like his master had taught him, he focused on one thing only: the mindworms.
                “Attack Soldiers, Attack soldiers.”
Soon, dozens of Planet’s native life forms came out of the fungus, heading right for the convoy. The Spartans were disciplined but mindworms frightened them. You could not fight them with traditional weapons. The Spartans soldiers grabbed their handheld weapons and began to shoot at the mindworms. It wasn’t working. Their minds were literally paralyzed. Nightmares. Fears. The mindworms surrounded the convoy now, and most of the Spartans soldiers were dead or running for their life screaming, terrorized. Zen smiled. “Come my friends.” He thought. “Take me home.”
Meanwhile, Rick and John saw their chance for freedom. They jumped out of the transport rover and ran away from the mindworms. After a few minutes, they reached a forest, and stopped to catch their breath.
“We did it. We escaped.” said Rick.
“Did you see that man in the corner who was meditating? I think he was controlling the mindworms.”
“I think you are right. I’m just glad that we are safe.”
                “Now what do we do?”
“We find our way back to friendly territory. But first we need to find some food and get some rest. Night is falling.”

Night had fallen now, but Rick could not sleep. He stared at the stars. How beautiful they were! His thoughts kept wandering. Was Alicia alive? Was she thinking of him? And who was that stranger who controlled mindworms? Eventually, exhausted, Rick fell asleep. Tomorrow, there would be a lot to do.

Next episode: Rick and John meet Zen. The Planetary Council meets.
