MasterBuilder and I started yet another PBEM role-playing adventure. This time we chose Dilithium Dad’s Builder’s Map of Planet and, to mix things up, random factions. I got the Good Chairman, and MB got Santiago. We set it up for non-directed research, with most other configurations standard.
After a bit of thought we decided to name the PBEM anthology after how we are playing our factions. I think it fits.

“Officer Santiago could I have a word?”
Security Chief Corazon Santiago quickly turned around in the cramped room.
“Yes, what can I help you with Johnson!” Santiago barked back. She was tired, very tired. Since landing nearly four weeks ago she had hardly had a moment of sleep as they worked around the clock to stabilize the cryonic chambers and set-up base camp. It was clear that their landing pod had not been properly “stocked” prior to leaving orbit around Earth since there were not food, medical or construction supplies in the pod. It had been a bitter pill to swallow for everyone since it meant that they could only “thaw” out a few people at a time when their were sufficient food stuffs and room to support them.
“Officer Santiago I thought we had talked about this before my title is Delegate. I am the High Commissioners representative here and as such I fill it is my duty to point out to you that I am not comfortable at all with you decision to allow the second colony module to leave base camp along with our only means of protection the rover team.” Johnson said in his whiny and pompous tone of voice that Santiago had quickly learned to dislike.
“Delegate Johnson we need to disperse our people so that should something happen we will not face annihilation. It is clear to even you that we have no idea if anyone else made it down and as such we have to assume the worse.” Santiago fired back.
“I fully understand your argument Officer Santiago but that is not your decision to make. The chain of command is clear in this situation and I am the starting and ending point. I did not authorize you to dispatch the rover team or the colony module!” Johnson yelled at her his face becoming splotchy in anger.
Santiago stood patiently as Johnson finished his tirade and then remained still gathering her emotions. She hated this puny man more than anything she could imagine with the exception of the traitor that sabotaged the Unity.
“Delegate Johnson I am a seasoned field officer and we are in a survival situation here. If things would have been different I would be more than willing to bow to your leadership.” Santiago said sarcastically. “But we are in a life and death struggle here. It is clear from the ruins we found that this planet is not empty. The monolith still emits power and exerts a strange effect around the area it is in. You need to cope with the fact that this is clearly a military situation now.”
“No Officer Santiago! I will not accept it!” Johnson blurted back in anger. Spittle flew from his mouth in anger and his face became even splotchier. The lack of oxygen made even the smallest exertion seem like you were moving a mountain and this little fat man was hardly in shape to become with. “There are supply pods nearby and we can access them. I am sure the High Commissioner is nearby as well. We need to follow with the plan laid out by Pravin Lal and continue as if nothing has happened. In time the High Commissioner will work this all out.”
Santiago was now utterly convinced this man was an idiot. If she continued to follow this fool and allow him to make decisions they would be dead within a year.
“Johnson leave this room now!” She ordered and stared at him in fury.
“No Officer Santiago I will not leave but you will leave! I hereby remove you from the landing team command staff. I am also placing you under arrest!” Johnson’s face was completely red now.
In a fraction of a second Santiago knew she had to act and act she did. In what seemed like a blur she reached for Johnson’s head and snapped his neck like a toothpick. Delegate Johnson hit the floor in a crash that toppled over a chair. Within a few seconds the door flew open and two of Santiago’s security officers rushed in.
“The Delegate has had an attack of something and he is dead. I think the lack of oxygen caused a brain hemorrhage. Pick him up and take him to the storage locker until I can make arrangements.”
“Yes Chief!” They replied and quickly picked up the body. As they picked up the body the Delegate’s head rolled about on his shoulders in a very peculiar manner. Both men quickly realized that the Delegate did not die from natural causes. Both men looked at Santiago for a few seconds as if waiting for an explanation. Santiago just stared back and both men knew immediately that this was all they were going to get in the form of an explanation. Neither of them had liked the Delegate and resented him immediately when he declared himself the leader over their Chief of Security, Corazon Santiago. They quickly removed the body and the door closed behind them leaving Santiago alone and in charge.
She sat down in the small chair next to the map table and began to think of what she had done. She knew it had to be done. Strong leadership was needed to save these people. It would a tough time for everyone and sacrifices had to be made by everyone for the group to survive. Survival was now paramount for her and it she intended it to be for her people as well. She was startled when she realized that she was now thinking of them, the people as her people. It had come so quickly that she almost missed that moment that she knew she was really in charge. She had to guide these people to shape them and forge them into something stronger than steel itself to survive here. They would all have to forget about their life on earth and realize that life on this new planet would demand a whole new life.
She stood up and walked to the door and opened it. Outside of the room was the tiny command room that served as the nerve center for the fledging colony. Everyone in the room stopped talking and turned to watch her. She stared back for about a minute and than firmly said. “I want all of the senior members of the command staff here within the hour I need to talk with them.” She then turned and went back into her office and closed the door.
