Multiplayer Problem

I have been trying to play Alpha Centauri online with someone using the IP direct connect thing. When we first started trying to get it to work nothing went wrong until it seemed almost ready to play (fully loaded and such), then there was a terran.exe error or something like that. Now we can't even get that far. When I enter the other person's game, I see his name and it is red, my name is green. If I remember correctly, I can't see my or the other persons faction setting. Also I beleive that if I try to change my faction choice it freezes. If anyone can explain why this happens please let me know, thanks.
