  • A sort of Alpha Olympics

I was thinking despite the fact there are not many players in our community. We should have a tournament between players.

I was thinking a series of H2H battles. Then finals. And to make it even, every map should exactly the same with identical starting locations.

(this last part is just an idea).

    What do you guys think??

I'm not sure whether it should be round robin or like a season or what.

There were tournments before- Tau Ceti's being the best known- and I think H2H battles. But the length of time to play a game meant it became a drawn out process to the extent that ppl lost interest.

There are too few of us left playing smac that it just wouldn't work I think.

TCP/IP may be our only hope now.

Indeed with just 2 playing H2H with or without AI and with the improvements with broadband, it might work.

However under IP it may not be possible to re-use same map and starting conditions. I simply don't know.

Hello to you all. I never posted here before, but I am still playing SMAX with great pleasure. I am interested in this kind of tournament, and I really think it can be done using TCP/IP with Hamachi (or so). I am regulary playing this way with one of my friends. I think he will be interested too. So, how many of us are interested?

By the way I like the idea of the same map and starting locations, same conditions, etc.

Hi there bdanv and welcome to Apolyton and the forums.

It might be worth trying as our last attempt at TCP/IP didn't work.

Never had a problem with TCP/IP and Hamachi playing on H2H, so I think that we sould give it a try and see what happens.
We already have: SmacxVeteran, t_ras, bdanv ... and the list is open. I think that 4-6 entries are more that enough for this first "Olympics". This way we can play H2H with everyboby else in a reasonable amount of time, and then go for the semis and the final.
We will need also, somebody (nonplaying) to set up the map, starting locations, rules etc. I also think that we should play random factions (smac or smax).

Let's do it, maybe this way we will reactivate some old members of this community. Hopefully we won't wait 4 years for the second Olympics.

I never played and IP game. I'm not sure I have that much time. In fact I'm not sure how much time is it...will 3-4 hours be enough?

3- 4 hours should be enough. But even then it should be possible to save and play as pbem.

Yes we should try to keep it under 4 hours. So I think we should use small/tiny wolrds, simultaneous moves ... Other ideas to make it short, are welcome ...

AFAIK you can save and resume an IP game (at least i used to) - and also, you can load a map and/or scenario onto an IP start, so same map starts are possible
